Question for those with experience...can a cab like the super twin really come close to the volume of an 8x10? I would love to have a smaller cabinet that can give me similar headroom/volume as my Ampeg 810. The head I'm using is the Mesa D800.

Which 1x12 did you get? SM, BB2, SC? I have a SM and a BB2, and agree that i seldom if ever "need" both... but nice to be able to anyway. Just curious as to which you have.

EDIT: hold on, just read your signature area, looks like you have two FR800's. Those, plus the LF1400, constitute my dream PA cab setup. Maybe some day.

I often bring both my BB2's to a gig simply because having two drivers running sounds better to me, certainly not for sheer volume as I don't often get to play very loud. If I must stand very close to my amp I will sometimes bring one BB2 and my Fearless F110 with the Greenboy cab tilted back.

I'm looking to get another Super Compact for that same reason. Stacking them would allow me to hear better and hopefully get some more clean headroom. I usually have to stand close to my amp.

So, with the Super Twin, you'll want a little less bass from the amp at high volumes, since the cab doesn't tighten up, for lack of a better word. Volume wise, the two are absolutely in the same ballpark.

That's actually what I love about my Super Twin...I like a very deep authoritative love end in some of my bands, and until Barefaced, no other cab was able to mantain that performance at very loud volumes. In fact I even boost a little the lows in my bass and the ST just takes it without complaining, and the best part is that it never gets boomy, it's always a very fast and accurate response with no over hang, even in the low notes on the 5th string...just LOVE IT!!!

This description really nails it for me! And the SuperMidget trades just a little of that low end power (which can be recovered with the 'bass' control) for ultra portability.

I think the SuperCompact will deliver the lows and the super light weight!

When I ordered my SuperMidget, I added the top hat pole mount....I'm glad I did. I played some acoustic upright bass gigs the last two nights. The first night I placed the cab on the ground, and found that I had to turn it up louder to hear myself. The second night I used the pole mount, and put the cab at ear level...it was much easier to hear clearly without playing too loud. I've used this setup before and sometimes I will augment it with my BB2 or AccuGroove Wedgie cab. If anyone plays upright I'd really recommend adding the pole mount.

Although there are actually two Ampeg 8x10 in the rehearsal room besides my own, I have not yet compared the two to my Super Twin. Maybe I'll do that tonight. What I can tell you right now is, with my Orange Terror Bass 500, I could EASILY drown the rest of the band including the drummer. And when it gets crazy monster loud, it never loses its low end. I played it in small to medium sized rooms (a big stage gig is coming by the end of october), and outside on a school yard with no walls whatsoever anywhere near. I have never sounded close to this good before when playing outside, absolutely no lack of fundamental/bottom, and easily loud enough without pushing the amp at all.
The last big stage I played with the Super Twin's smaller brother, the Super Compact (I had that one befor I switched to the Super Twin). I chose to play over the Compact even though there was a huge Ashdown 15 plus 2x10 fridge right beside it. The Super Compact was easily as loud and sounded deeper and more round, plus more defined. For the Super Twin, multiply the results....

I know it sounds impossible. But, all settings equal, the sound of the Super Compact was deeper and rounder than that of the fridge. I might add, I have not tried higher volumes since that was not necessary there but at the relatively moderate stage volume that night, the Super Compact stole the show.

I also have the tophat pole mount in my SM, as well as my One10. I don't use it all the time but I am glad I have it, and I DO use it, on both models. I figure, I am paying this much for a cab anyway, might as well trick it out for an extra $50.

You see, budget wise I'm just not in the market for a new cabinet at the moment, but as soon as I become able to be in the market for a new cabinet, I know exactly which direction I'm going to be going... I mean really , a 212 cabinet under 40 lb that can put an 810 cabinet to bed blows my flipping mind.... (we need an exploding head emoticon! )

When mounted on a pole, there's less bass, right? That's not a problem?

That's not a problem with upright bass. Sometimes I'll add a second cab (either my AccuGroove Wedgie or my BB2) that's on the ground...which adds volume and low end.

I've got a retro six10 with cover. It's about a month old with 3 or 4 gigs on it. I just found out that my band is done at the end of the year and I won't be gigging for a long time after so, I may be selling it. It lives up to the hype. I don't plan to ship so, if you are semi-local to 13662, pm me.
