Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

I have not A/B'd the two. The Big Twin is a bigger box so it will have a bigger sound even without the tweeter. I got the Super Twin. I also have Acmes with the big, pillowy, laid back sound. The Super Twin gets plenty fat but is more focused than my Acmes.

I don't want to be mean, but those look one hundred percent better than the bass cabs in terms of finish. I have a One10 and love it, and I think its look is much better than the 12" cabs, but the guitar cabs look like the next step.

It's shallow to say it, but the looks do count as well as the (excellent) sound...

Also curious about this. I would think a good approximation is a BT2 with the tweeter all the way off?
That could give you a close approximation, but remember that the BB2 tweeter controls doesn't adjust the level of the tweeter. It adjusts the crossover frequency between the woofer and the tweeter (between about 4K Hz and 10KHz, if I remember correctly?)

Lowering the frequency on the tweeter control means that the crossover frequency is at its lowest setting so more of the high end signal gets sent to the tweeter (i.e. everything from about 4000 Hz and up). By raising the tweeter control, you raise the crossover point so that only the highest frequencies get sent to the tweeter (i.e. about 10KHz and up). With the setting at its highest, and therefore more of the signal going to the woofer, you effectively turn that driver into a full range driver and you get its natural rolloff somewhere above 4 KHz, but the tweeter still gets that "air" above that 10 KHz point.

Hopefully I explained that right....

To not be mean either, they are very retro looking. I don't have any affection for anything retro.

I have a ST because I have always had a mixed relationship with tweeters. At the time I purchased it, I was playing stoner\doom metal that didn't need a lot of super high attack, and used lots of distortion. My understanding what that fuzz and drive didn't play well with the tweeter.
On both my GK cabs (that I sold to buy the ST) and Ampeg combo, the tweeter control didn't seem like it did squat. Plus the BT2 was a lot more expensive as the prices were a little higher then (yeah Brexit.)
Now I'm rethinking whether I want a cab with a horn or tweeter. I was just wondering if the tweeter really makes a difference, or if it is one of those "only dogs can hear it" sort of things.

Sounds to me like you might be better off with BF tens, the best of both worlds. No tweeter but highs still go to 7k which is plenty for me and more than your ST.
 
@dave64o DUDE! You got me thinking about the frequency cut off on the ST, which is 4khz. I DI'ed my head into Studio One and then used T-RackS EQual to put a LPF at 4k. Bam! All the transience of my playing attack died.
I've been chasing my tail for two weeks messing with expensive amps trying to get more zip out of my playing, and the problem was my cab the whole time.
Well, not the cab really as much as my cheapness when I bought it.

So now I have to decide if I want to plunk down for a BT and what to do with the DB751 and M9 I bought last week. They are bitch'n amps, but that's money I could put towards the BT.

I did this too when I was looking at a One10. Try moving the lpf to 6k, which is One10 cut off, the difference is staggering. I find 6k very acceptable

The ST and BT2 won't sound the same. The BT2 is a far bigger box and that will have a big effect on the sound, tone and volume. Check out the details on the website.
The BT2 is four inches taller and half an inch wider. I wouldn't say it is "far" bigger. I could see how it might impact general tone, but I wouldn't think it would be a night and day difference.

I'm not sure simulating the roll off with a LPF set at 4Khz (or 6Khz) is an accurate representation. My guess is the roll off in the actual cab, if you could measure it, will be gradual down from 4khz covering some 4-5Khz but at decreased dB. The speaker won't do a harsh cut off at 4Khz like a LPF. I now own both a ST and a One10 and get loads of attack and great overdriven tones with both, particularly the ST (the One10 is more my home practice cab). It's also very responsive if i roll the 7Khz up on my head, you can clearly hear the difference in the ST. (BTW, i play with a P bass with Roto 66's and a pick...couldn't be happier with the tone of both)
In my experience you can hear a difference with a horn or tweeter but they sound downright nasty (in an unmusical way) with fuzz or distortion as they accentuate too high a freq. band (think wasps in a can)

Yes,agree, i was just trying point out there is quite a noticeable difference between 4k and 6k in terms of upper end bass tone. I found there was significantly more top end in the one10 compared to my BB2 with the horn turned off

When I was looking at the sound wave coming out of a Mesa M9 in EQual the high end transients went well above 4 or 5K. They are at a low db, but still there. Even with a smoother taper on the LPF I lose something.
When I bought my ST I was playing a different style of music. I was using fuzz and was more concerned with getting an SVT sound in the smallest package possible. The ST achieved that. My new situation calls for something else. I'm still playing pretty loud, and I need a little more zip on the highs than what a P bass would typically offer. I'm using a Spector 5LX with EMG electronics and playing pretty fast.
The best test would be to try out another cab. Really good 212 cabs in stores are a rare thing these days.

Fair enough...if you do try the BT2 i'd be interested to hear much you they do differ in the top end compared to the ST

It isn't a frequency cut off. The cone rolls off around 4kHz, it doesn't stop dead. The central dome rolls off around 10kHz. Crank the highs and you'll get a lot of treble extension out of the 12XN drivers.

I had a Carbine M9 plugged in and it sort of felt like it was fighting the highs a little. I've learned that the Mesa D800 is a tad dark, so I tried something known for a little more sharp attack in the highs. The M9 got close but still didn't pop the way I wanted.

Am I kidding myself if I think I can get the sort of clear definition in a live amp/cab situation that you hear on a studio recording or live recording from the board. Is that a false expectation?
