The lines are nice. The carving, too (though the scroll isn't full carved). And the Walnut has a lovely figure! But the wood choices are incoherent: Purpleheart, Padauk, Walnut, flamed Maple, and Ash(?) together like that is too busy--each choice is competing for attention rather than collaboratively producing a harmonious whole.

I see two culprits. First, the flamed Maple on the headstock feels random because that theme occurs nowhere else. Second, and this is the real troublemaker, the orange of the Padauk and the purple of the Purpleheart just don't work together. As is, they obfuscate what is meant to be an accent and what is meant to be a contrast. For example, the brown of the Walnut and the yellow of the Ash (and Maple) are the base colors here. They establish a bold contrast (versus CT basses that have orange-stained Mahogany bodies under Walnut). That means either the Purpleheart or the Padauk could work as an accent. But not both. It just gets confusing from an aesthetic standpoint. If the Padauk were replaced with something more neutral like Ebony (which would also pick up on the figure in the Walnut) then this would work. Or the Padauk could stay and the Purpleheart could be replaced with more Walnut or even flamed Maple to balance with the headstock veneer.

Thanks for the feedback. It's very constructive and I appreciate that. I'll keep your input in mind for my next build (via similar blanks config).

You nailed all of the woods. The front of the wing blanks are Bolivian Rosewood, and the back is walnut.

I agree with you about the grain. There is a lot going on between the rosewood and ash.

My pleasure. You've got the woodcraft skills, and presumably the lutherie (no way to know without playing the bass), so a little more refinement in the ascetics should be easy enough. Plus such things are subjective :)

Haha oops, I missed the Rosewood. I wasn't sure if it was just a more figured set of Walnut. Kind of you to say I got them all, though!

Hey there,
Very quick question, because I have found nothing except a single post from almost 20 years ago about this. What fretwire is used on Carl Thompsons? I don't want a specific brand, just some potential specs. I've heard medium jumbo in one single post before, that's about it. From what I could gather, medium jumbo is a 6130 (roughly in mm: w2.7, h0.9, t0.5). Could anyone give me some insight?
I could bet he probably changed the sizes at some point, but I'm mostly interested in the after 2000 models.

Would really appreciate some help!
