A year or two ago the word was that a split PU for bass was in the offering, but they wanted the Brian Bromberg splash to not be diminished. Maybe it's time now?

I think she's going to end up with nickel rounds on at some point, but I'm going to let things sink in the way they are for a minute.
However, question for the Carvin club (and I apologize if this has been answered already, it's late and I have work in the a.m.): Does anyone know who does strings for Carvin? I've read rumors that it's LaBella, but searching for "flats that have purple silk" lead me to believe the strings that came on mine are GHS Precision Flats, which I've never purchased before. Can anyone confirm?

I have never heard anything other than LaBella. On the other hand, purple silk is what GHS uses on Precision Flats. Maybe LaBella uses a different color of silk on the Carvin flats so they don't look identical to their own. Just guessing.
That's kind of my thinking as well. I played a Lakland P that had Lakland flats, which I REALLY liked. The owner of the shop (Dan @ Premier Bass Guitars near Boulder CO, who did the custom work on that bass) had it confirmed that the Lakland flats are in fact GHS Precision Flats (but without silks, if memory serves), and these feel MUCH different than those. These strings feel like they have a much higher tension, much like the D'Addario Chromes I had on my Pbass for a long time. The strings on that Lakland felt almost like the super light EXL220's I use on my Jazz V... Loved them!
I'll definitely be experimenting with strings on my SB5k. Not sure where I'll end up though. I feel like she needs a set of nickel rounds.....?

I asked this question to the folks at LaBella. They confirmed that they do make the tapewounds (duh, as their name is on the package), but gave no confirmation or denial on the others.
I agree that the Carvin flats appear closer to GHS Precisions. I play LaBella flats on my P5, and they definitely are not the same string on many fronts.
Gorgeous bass BTW! I love the stained back of the neck.
Thanks for the info, and the props on the bass! I was pretty stunned when I saw the back of the neck... I knew it was going to be stained to match, but I think they did the deep triple step on that as well. That's the only explanation I have for the grain coming out like that!

Looks like Carvin has started charging extra for streak-free ebony fingerboards. I'm definitely interested to see the pieces that have some streaking. I'm guessing they'll look pretty awesome.
Will Carvin send you pictures of the pieces of wood they'll use for your bass? I suppose it would be somewhat time consuming for them if everyone wanted pictures of their wood before it's cut.

I think streaked ebony looks really nice, and I'd be happy to have a bass with a streaked fingerboard.
There have been cases when Carvin has taken pictures of wood, but there is a serious upcharge. The same is true of custom paint colors. Then, the bass is non-returnable except for defects or construction flaws. I don't think they do this very often, either. They are really busy all the time there.

My fingerboard does have some light streaking here and there, but you can't really see it in the pictures... It looks really nice and I dig it.
I've always been a fan of more markings and variations in the wood on my basses. In the words of Ray Riendeau, "the more diseased and crazy it is, the cooler it is."
