Man you guys got some sweet basses!
I've been wanting a 5 string fretless LB75P Koa/Maple-Walnut/Tung oiled w/Black hardware FOREVER!

I've been thinking of ordering Carvin's Mahogony Colbalt acoustic guitar, it looks nice and the reviews are great.

Until then Here is my offering, a poorman's fEarful -
Carvin LS1503 3-way speaker, powered with a Crown XLS2000 poweramp. Lovin' it! I'll use different Pre's for different gigs.

Thanks! It's my only fretless, so I can't really compare it to anything else, except for the last fretless I had -- a Carvin B5 about 12 years ago. The SB5000 is far better in every way. The neck is great, the mwah is there in spades and it really sings. I really like the preamp, and I am not an active-bass kind of guy. The passive sound is killer, and the preamp just gives it a boost. I paid under a grand for this bass and I feel like I stole it.

So...you bought a lineless fretless after 12 years Dave?!?! It looks absolutely freakin' killer, and is really giving me gas, but I seriously doubt I could make a go of it without the lines :) Black and tortoise is just such a classic, beautiful look though, and the fretless neck looks gorgeous but also a bit intimidating to me! LOL

You know what would sell me an unlined fretless bass? Lines on the side of the neck where the frets are supposed to be so I can see where the lines should be but the audience cant. Show me where to put my fingers but let the audience see that big black slab and think I have crazy talent. Just throwing it out there... hahahaha (sorry, beer night here in joisey! lol)

Did you get the standard preamp and electronics, or did you do anything different? I think my playing around with the 'build one of your own' tool came to about $1150, which is insane for this quality! LOL

I was always under the assumption that the fret dots were on the neck, even if the fret lines were not. Is this not the case?
Otherwise you could frequently be off tune by half a note(?)

+1 to that. I used to run mine in passive all the time because I liked the sound better until I figured out how to dial it in with the preamp engaged.

Thanks, it really is a great bass. The only extra I got was the tort guard, otherwise it's a stock SB5000. $964 + shipping! Insane deal. I was switching back and forth last night between active and passive, and it's a win-win, especially because the tone control works either way.
I went with unlined because I like the look better, and also because lines tend to confuse me. I always seem to be off by a half-step on a lined fretless! The position dots on top of the neck help with navigation. The unlined black board also helps the pickups stand out a little less. Aesthetically, I prefer exposed polepieces, but the sound is great either way.
