Just got done placing an online order for a LB75.

Ash body w/rounded body sides
Flamed maple top
Blueburst paint job w/matching headstock
Birdseye maple board w/abalone dot inlays
SP2 Soapbar pickups
Black hardware

$1288 which isn't a bad price for a "custom" job. I was surprised that it was actually cheaper than my Lakland 55-02. The pup configuration was the hardest choice for me. It was a toss up between the soapbars or the HB2 bridge & coil switch/H50S neck pickup.

I just hope it sounds as good as its gonna look.

:hyper::bassist: I just received my IC6P yesterday and I LOVE it. I was worried reading all of the posts on talkbass and other places about the sound quality of Carvins not being up to par with other customs like Ken Smith and Conklin, etc. This thing is PERFECT for my playing style. I wouldn't change anything. I have 2 Soaps and the Peizo bridge pickup and the tonal options are great. I find myself using just the peizo alone alot of the time for more laid-back stuff. It has plenty of low-end and upper-end definition. It sound WONDERFUL. I have to be careful with the EQ because a small adjustment makes a big difference. It's much more complicated to control than my old-school Carvin active pre with 2 H50s. The H50's sound pretty good and probably have more punch, but are much more limited and don't come close to the upper-end of either the soaps or the Piezo.

So, here's my Bass...
IC6P, Maple neck, Walnut Body, Flame maple top. Black hardware. Steel frets. Tung-oil Neck.

Hey guys,

For a long time I'm considering to have a bass custom made. And I might take the step to order a custom.

I've narrowed it down to two: Carvin and a local luthier.
Both have pros and cons.


But I'm a newbee when it comes to the aspects and options of a custom bass. Such as finishes. :help:

I used the Carvin configuration tool, and these are the things I don't understand or know about (in bold):

model: LB20, right hand, fretless

body/neck woods: maple neck & body
I chose maple because the most dense and heavy wood.

no top wood

no rounded body sides
is there that much differences?

top coat: ?????
I don't know for sure what all the different finishes are. I just want a natural look, show the wood of the body as it is, and not glossy,... so Satin Matte? what is tung-oiled?

color options: .....
so I don't have to select one if I'm going for natural,... right??

neck options: maple neck with 2 walnut stripes.
again looking for the most dense and heavy wood

back of neck options: ????
again: finish

headstock shape: don't know yet, reverse inline is cool.

headstock wood and finish: headstock to match body.

fingerboard options: none
if I don't select one I get an unlined fretless, right? cause that's what I want.

fingerboard radius: 10"
any experiences? I think a more rounded fingerboard will suit me better.

pickups: H50S stacked humbuckers

hardware: gold

strings: doesn't matter, can always change them

Carvin headstock logo: ???
i'd like to see some examples of this, this may be flashy

miscellaneous options: rosewood knobs, straplocks, detuner

and a tweed case



If someone can guide me with some of the issues above please.
I chose the LB20 because I prefer passive basses.


Also, how does Carvin work international?
I have have to go to a dealer, right?
I found the distributor here in Belgium and a dealer nearby.

I have a IC4WP. I went with the satin matte finish which gives it a nice natural look and some protection from the environment. Oil will give the most natural look though. Some people like satin matte with everything but the neck and use the tung oil for it. The maple neck with 2 walnut stripes is their five piece neck, which is an option I got. Supposedly helps with the sustain but I think it looks good. For the headstock, you have have it match the natural look of the neck or have it match the body of the bass (in my case it's walnut).

Thanks for the answer.

I saw the picture of your bass.
That seems like the kind of finish I want.

I'm a bit weary about those gloss finishes.
When looking at pictures of custom basses here on TB most of them look kind of plastic. I suspect those are gloss finished.
It might also be that pictures are not the same as real life, and the lighting and reflection.

I think matte finish is what I want. I have a guitar that I assume is matte finish. (remember I don't know anything about this)

I want to body to look like it's taken directly from a tree, and just garnisched with pup's and strings.

I'm going to look at more pictures of Carvins and try to figure out what's what.


Anyone knows what's the best way to order outside the US? Dealers right? I'm going to contact one off course, but with a bunch of Carvin owners here it's obvious I ask here for experiences first from owners rather than from salesmen.

Just a correction, there called BR cabs.

I'm kinda bummed, I just went out and purchased the BRX10.4 Neo cab after owning the BR410 and BR118 cabs. Of coarse to swap out the regular drivers with neo drivers would probably cost more than buying the BRX10.4 by itself. I know one thing, I love my BRX10.4, it's a dead on awesome cab. I'm running the BX1200 head into the BRX10.4 Neo @ 4ohm, bridged @ 1,200 watts rms. Needless to say it's a kickass setup.:smug:
