I suspect that the pin placement is based upon the balance of the individual instrument. I'll have to look again when I get home but I think that 2 of the three I have are in the traditional position and one is not. I can't recall.

Devon P+MM Diary #1
Dear club members, I think it is time for me to start sharing a little about the bass Devon is currently building for me! I contacted him back in December 2019, he was super responsive by email so we quickly nailed down the specs. I wanted a bass that does both a Stingray and a Precision sound. I'm aware of the small overlap of the two pickups in their traditional sweet spots, but the demo I heard/watched of Carey Nordstrand's bass he built for Dan Lutz convinced me that would work.
First, with Devon we agreed on woods: alder body (chambered for weight no greater than 9 lbs), maple neck, Pau Ferro fingerboard (didn't want rosewood to avoid hassle if crossing borders), and wenge top. Here is the pic he sent me that convinced me on the wenge (not my bass, just to get an idea):

Next, I wanted block inlays! Not a fan of mother of pearl, I asked Devon about wood inlays. He showed me this:
And I chose the Birdseye maple (bottom one) to create contrast.

Some weeks later, Devon had finished the neck and it was time to route the body for the pickup cavities. Here, we exchanged many emails, Devon gave me very useful suggestions though always listened to what I wished. We agreed on placing the P split-coil in its exact traditional sweet spot, and placing the MM humbucker next to it (i.e. a few millimeters closer to the bridge than its traditional sweet spot). Here the exciting pic where you see both the finished neck and pickup cavities:

So, i visited Guitar Center of El Paso Today and i was amazed they had a beautiful great condition Devon J5 for sale. Its not on the GC page maybe because it just arrived. In case someone is looking for one. If i had the cash I would be all over but i can’t afford it right now. It has bartolini preamp and pick ups.
