One piece of advice... get a single-H version... especially if you're really looking for that SR "bite". The H is the ONLY one that has series mode, which IMHO is a required tone on an SR. Also, IMHO, the pseudo single-coil mode is much nicer 'cause the phantom coil is right on the bottom of the pickup instead of being another single-coil pickup that's simply sunk down in the body under the pickguard. The aperture is smaller, giving greater focus.

This is NOT to dis the HH and HS models... I do like those, but every time I played them I was missing series mode. If I were to get a SECOND SR, I'd prolly get a HS or HH, but not as a first/only one.

Finally, they're not all really heavy. Mine's a KILLER SR5 and it only weighs 9.3 pounds.

Ditto. I've tried all the new configurations and none of them sound quite as good as just a single H... it also looks a lot better in the single H configuratino, IMO.

Vic, Thanks so much for the information. You've answered my next question on whether to buy one sight-unseen over the net. I've actually had my eye on a Single-H Black/Maple SR5 for $950. But I had better play it before buying it. I'm so compulsive; GAS makes me stupid.

"The H is the ONLY one that has series mode, which IMHO is a required tone on an SR."

Is Series mode with the switch towards neck or bridge, or in the middle? It seems the fattest tone is with the switch towards the bridge, yes?

Guys,

What constitutes the price differences for new SR5's with the basic configuration of 1H - color, board, etc.? I look at new prices, and they seem to range from $1450 ~ $1800.

I would love to buy a used SR5 would be 1H, maple board, and piezo. But I have not seen any used SR5 with piezo for sale.

Dave, this year EBMM raised prices on all instruments they make. I don't exactly know why, but I'd imagine it has to do with the high quality and the fact they are made in America and they maintain better QC than other larger MIA brands.

The price hike was put out last year, so it's old news.

It's a good business move on their part, and I don't mind paying a couple hundred bucks more for real quality. Give'em one thing...they know their business.

Here's my Stingray. These basses almost play themselves. Best maple neck of all time!!!

The price increases were probably due to the rise in cost of materials and labour.

The range can be due to options. Certain finishes, pickguard choices, matching headstock, piezo, etc... all add to the base price. Some retailers may also have pre-price increase stock available as well and therefore the prices may be lower than others.

Can someone direct me to a SR5 price/options list?

Thanks!!

The first is an 88' Sterling (pre-Ernie Ball I think..) with an Ernie Ball Neck. The other is a standard mid 90's Ernie Ball Stingray 4. I want to put a neck with a rosewood fretboard on it but am running into trouble finding one. I talked to someone at Ernie Ball and they told me that they wouldn't sell me a replacement neck separately, which makes no sense to me. Anyone who has any info on this, I'd appreciate it. P.s. I want to join the 'Club'.. Thanks

Nice looking Sterling and Stingray. The Sterling model wasn't introduced until after Ernie Ball Co. took over Musicman. I think they will excange the Maple board you have for a Rosewood neck, (plus $, probably) but don't sell the necks, PUs or bodies seperately.

whats weird is that on the back panel where the neck bolts on, it has the original music man logo, as opposed to how the newer models have the Ernie Ball logo.. Maybe cuz its an 88', I checked the serial number and researched and I'm sure of the year

I'll ask Ernie Ball about the exchange.

Thanks

Not to mention inflation

True. Sterling Ball is Ernie's third son, and I believe the one currently in charge of the EBMM company. :)

He did assist Leo Fender and Forrest White with the design the first Musicman bass, the Stingray, in 1976, but the Sterling model didn't come around until '93.
