thanks...which one is lighter? the sterling? anyway..do they have a 5 string on a sterling?
I'm with Vic on getting the H but then I am but a simple man.
I cannot describe all those differences because I'm not sure what's causing the tone diffs in my basses, but I can say this - the anniversary SR5 with the tone block is quite possibly THE best bovinehost tone I've ever encountered.
But then there's a lot of stuff going on there - the alnico magnets (vs ceramic on 'regular' SR5s), a revamped preamp and then the tone block. I just don't know. I guess I'd have to say it's a combination of those things.
The straight mahogany body on the 30th SR4 has some serious gnarly growl in the high mids which I think can be attributed to the body wood.
If you have a personal web site you can put the pics on, it's SUPER easy to get them to display in your post.I just ordered a Sterling HH in white with maple board and shell pickguard from Bass Central. I will attempt to post pictures when it arrives. I say attempt because I am only successful about 50% of the time. For some reason, my pictures exceed the size limit much of the time and I have no patience for playing around to make them fit.

This addition will keep my 1978 Ray company. The Ray is my favorite player but lately I've had some problems with the wide neck. I'm hoping the Sterling is the cure.

Ahhhh, yes... know them well...Thanks, I'll have to look into that. It just fries me how some people can post great pictures and when I try to upload from my computer, I get a message that the picture has exceeded the size limit. I will add that I am very computer-literate, having contributed in no small way to several large scale MRP system implementations. Oh well.
I'm thinking about getting a Sterling but I'm not sure what kind of used price range I'm looking at. I've seen them anywhere from about $1200 to $600 online. What am I looking at as far as cash outlay? Any recommendations of places to look? Other than Eb** I mean.

A right-handed one, right? I'd say, expect to spend about a grand, although you can probably snag one for a bit less that's still in excellent condition.
I've seen some nice ones (with wear and tear, of course) from around $700 to $900, but for one in really good condition, you'll be paying more.
I'd check out craigslist and keep an eye on your local shops. In a shop close to me in Berkeley, I spotted a used Sterling in a Blue Dawn finish that was in good shape, and it was only $700! I'd have bought it if I were right-handed.
) but it's a good deal and I believe they'll ship anywhere.
