I emailed EBMM this Sunday asking if they would make a 4 string version of the 20th Anniv Stingray 5: new preamp, alnico pup(s), swamp ash with mahogany tone block, etc. The got back to me about 7am this Monday morning:

They are talking about it but nothing definite yet and nothing slated for production.

I was pretty impressed with their prompt reply.

Funny, MysticBoo...I was just in The Starving Musician on Shattuck yesterday and played that Blue Dawn Sterling. Not an EB/MM fan (had a '92 ash/rosewood StingRay--love the solid construction, hate the preamps ) but it's a good deal and I believe they'll ship anywhere.

Yep, that's the one. :D

And yeah, they'll ship anywhere that the big three shippers (USPS, UPS, FedEx) will ship to.

I'll go you one better than that...

When I got my new SR5 it was everything I wanted in an EBMM bass... all the tone and a particularly light one for an SR5 at only 9.3 pounds... HOWEVER, it had kind of a nasty fret level issue about mid-neck on the D and especially G string.

I didn't want to exchange the bass, because this one was hand selected and perfect in every other way.

I'm VERY particular about fret level, so I assumed I'd have to send it to a specialist to get it perfect. Thankfully I was wrong. The folks at EBMM took it back and did the level for the cost of shipping to them, and it was dead perfect when I got it back. It's THE best SR5 I've played to-date, which includes many, including a stunning SR5 HH 20th I had for a while.

Umm... crap, I can't remember. I haven't been there in a while... maple, I think?

Ask winston - he tried it out yesterday! :D

Yes, it was maple. Overall it seemed to be in good condition--straight neck, not too much wear on frets, finish was OK. Pickup and pots seemed kind of loose but everything worked. I have no idea whether a case is included. I wasn't really looking at it from a buyer's perspective, just checking out a bunch of basses on the wall.

It's only the second time I've been in that store but it's one of the few shops I've been in that prices used gear to sell.

Thanks, I will check it out. :)

damn you! Damn you all! Stop talking about my woman, er bass!
Well not really, but I saw her first either way.
I am trying to rationalize how I cuold afford it.
But I think I am not going to be able to do it. Some family issues came up and it looks like my money may be spoken for.

About the 4 string version of the 20th. how about that with an ebony f-board? Man. that would kill. Or the reg 5-ray like that would be er, uh, ok I am sorry I hate to be so typical but it would be effing killer.
I am just a sucker for ash, mahogany amd ebony.
OT I wish they made the Les Paul Money Bass in an Ebony f-board.

can i join?

Pretty cool. I was just thinking about how they did all of these improvements on the SR5 (pickup and preamp tweaks) and then only released them on a limited edition. Those guys take care of us though so hopefully we'll see those improvements make it to the normal production basses.

I can only imagine what awesomeness will appear on the Sterling 5.

Here are my two entries to the club:

My brand new unlined fretless Stingray with 3-band EQ and piezo option in honeyburst finish, and my 2001 fretted black Stingray with maple board.

I positively LOVE these basses!!

Hi Tony...very interested in your opinion of the sound of the piezo fretless. I ordered mine in May of this year and when it gets here I will be stringing it with TI flats and using it in a couple of different jazz ensembles.

I ordered the sunburst with matching headstock and lined board. I am a true SR convert. The sound with a good chorus pedal cannot be beat IMO. BTW, I browsed your Myspace site and we have VERY similar tastes in music.

If you dig the chorused SR fretless sound, check out "Ku Ku karama" on Paul Young's "No Parlez". Pino just kills!

I loved Nick Beggs (Kagagoogoo) as well. Great 'in -your-face' SR slap tone on several good cuts especially 'Ooh to be Ahh'

Let me know what you think of the piezo.

All the best

Todd
