Rob does a natural wax-type finish on all of his basses (he uses Briwax last I knew). There are a couple rare ones out there with a colored/hard finish, but they were done out of house IIRC.

bryan as far as the tops go obviously you can choose what type but being they are all from different slabs of wood they will look different....how do i know what my bass is going to look like or to some extent wont i ? also any recomendations on the wood for the body? we may have went through this already but im thinkin mahoghany....big difference in sound betwen that and the swamp ash?

To some extent you won't, unless you are requesting a pic of a certain top because you want something in particular as far as patterning, etc. goes. Try to figure out what you like for topwoods before you start your order if you can. I don't think I've ever seen an Elrick top that wasn't really nice, so you can't go wrong if you pick a wood you already know you like (maybe look at some Elricks around the internet and ask if you can get a top that looks like one of the ones you like).

As for body woods, there's a noticeable difference between swamp ash and mahogany. Swamp ash tends to be lighter in weight, brighter and snappier sounding. Mahogany is a little heavier and has a more even sound across the range of the instrument and is warmer. I've owned several in swamp ash, mahogany, alder, and walnut variations, and they all have their merits. My current six and my fretless that will be done soon have a mahogany body. I find it to be a better sound for my kind of fingerstyle and for a wide range like on a six-string. If I was looking for a bass for a lot of slapping, I'd go with swamp ash.

bryan....i know i want the spalted maple burl top....but why on the website are some different colors? i see know options for the actual stain or finish and i would think ,that being the top piece is a seperate wood, no matter what kind of wood you use for the body they would all look the same?

on the elrick page if you look at the neckthrough classic ....the top i like is the 2nd one in under "the calssic neckthrough.... its the spalted maple burl on swamp ash.... but i also like the lighter more goldish maple burl on some of the other basses pictured.

There are no stain/finish options directly from Elrick- they all have the same natural oil/wax finish which is pretty much uncolored and transparent. Woods of the same kind can come in very different colors. Spalted maple can be anything from a very light blond with thin black streaks to almost brown with heavy spalting. Buckeye burl can range from yellow to green to gray, even in the same piece.

Well, figure out which you like most and when it's time to order, ask if he has any in the color/value you like :)

Yup, Aeros and Demeter pre - I was the one who bought it from BassNW, then ended up selling to Gruuv after a few years. Out of all the basses I have owned, I think I miss that cherryburst Elrick the most. As Gruuv said - that thing was ALIVE. Who has it now?

i may check one out at rudys also....thanks though man...but here is the setup im thinking guys.....lemme know what you think...

-swamp ash or mahogany body
-spalted maple burl top
-maple neck
-brazilian or indian rosewood for the fretboard...(not sure if i want to spend the extra money for brazilian....is it worth it?)
-bartolini soapbar pickups
-gold hardware
- and i want pearl block inlays for the frets but i dont think rob offers them so i may have to settle for dots or just leave the neck plain..

Sounds nice enough- Rob doesn't do blocks or binding, so it'll be dots or blank. I haven't tried either of the rosewoods on on Elrick, so I can't comment on that.

dots on the face of the fretboard or only on the top of the neck? i dont think ive seen one single elrick piture with fret inlays so im a little nervous as to what it may look like with the wood and color combos that im choosing

There's always dots on the side of the neck unless you order them to not be there. They're pretty important :D There's a few with dots on the board pictured on his website. Here's one- there's a few others if you click around on the pics:
