I've bought it as recently as a couple of months ago at my local Price Chopper. I live at the outer extremes of nowhere, however, so maybe they're selectively supplying the boonies with this nectar:D

Oswego is a veritable seething metropolis compared to my town -Malone- which is an hour due north of Lake Placid and 10 clicks from the Quebec border. If you're ever in the neighborhood or in Montreal (my hometown, a little over an hour away) let me know fer a visit!

Hey guys, I have an Elrick fretless with an ash body, burled chestnut top (I believe) and pink ivory fingerboard. I absolutely love the warm, organic tone of this bass, but the Bartolini pickups make the tone seem a bit congested or compressed. Any recommendations for replacement pickups that will open up the sound a little more, but still retain the warm, organic sound of this bass?

I replaced the Bart preamp with an Audere, and it was a big improvement, but I still don't think I'm getting the real sound of this bass.

I'm pretty sure that's buckeye burl, but you can always email Rob to find out for sure. A lot of people like Aeros and Nordstrands for a more "open" sound. I prefer the darker sound in a lot of Bart pickups, but keep in mind that Bart has a whole line of pickups, so there are Barts that don't sound anything like the typical somewhat compressed-sounding Barts. I bought a replacement set of bright Bart soapbars years back and they didn't sound like the "regular" Bart soaps.

Yeah- it's a trimpot for the output gain of the Bart preamp. Turn it all the way down and your active volume will be about the same as the passive volume. Turn it up for a hotter signal.

Good luck keeping it this time! And think of it this way- put a dent or scratch in a burl top and people won't notice it nearly as much as a chunk of missing paint :)

That's funny you say that.......I have a LEJ5 that is at Brian's shop getting repaired for chunk of missing paint:D

I kicked myself in the balls for selling the Elrick......I took a HUGE hit selling it. Not to mention it had a really sick neck and phat sound after the BS pup mod. The owner of the bass was kind enough to sell it back to me for what I paid for it........karma is good!!

PS.......once I get her back, she's never leaving!!!!

How do you like your pickup spacing compared to normal spacing?



I'm getting back into gear, even though i shouldn't. Been away for too long. Just picked up a Juno keyboard, and am now looking into the Joemeek FloorQ. Have you tried one of these out yet? I know you're pretty picky with compressors.

Hey Kori,
I dig the spacing a lot- I thought I might not like it prior to getting the fretted six used- I had planned on having a soapbar installed at the typical neck position. Turned out I really liked it- they sound quite different despite being so close together (I'm sure they're voiced a bit differently as well). I've actually had very little compressor experience- I've had a couple Compulators, but that's about it outside of the compressors in my multi-effects. You may be thinking of bongomania- he's the guy who's tried all the compressors in the world :p I guess effects and keyboards are where you'd have to go next- you already have a ton of awesome basses :)
