Hey guys-

Just brought out my Elrick today after many months of not even touching it. I thought about selling it because I've become a total 4 string jazz bass guy...but my Elrick is too sweet to part with. It plays so great! I have always considered it to be a "modern" kind of vibe, but honnestly after playing only jazz basses for the past year...it feels so much closer to a jazz than even my F Bass.

Anyways, thinking about swapping out the pickups/preamp to get a different sound. I dig the old Barts...but they're a bit to compressed for my tastes now. Anyone using anything different in their Elrick? I'm thinking Nordstrand...but whats out there?

BTW...here is the bass!

One of my Classic Vs has the Aero pup option with the OBP-3. They are more open/airy up top and easier to get a grindy tone out of than the Barts IME.

what is up with this elrick? the knobs are not in a line like i am use to seeing on a NJS. and there is no switches?

I've seen knob placement like that on one other NJS I believe- they must be custom requests. Looks like the Fodera knob setup.

The string spacing (which is another term for the spacing at the bridge) and the width at the nut will automatically determine the width at the last fret, so you don't need to worry about the width at the last fret. Just know the string spacing you want (bridge) and the width at the nut you want.

Pffft, practice is for losers. I've already booked studio time for the day after it arrives. Trial by fire! Yeah, I'll be shedding a lot once it gets here. Hopefully I'll be able to get some vids up within a few weeks after I get it.

I did actually try to record with some friends about a week after I got my first fretless, and it was unlined. Man, THAT was rough. We had been playing for several hours already, so in addition to being completely inept with the new instrument, my ears were pretty iffy at that point (my ability to perceive pitch correctly goes way down after a lot of loud music- I should probably wear earplugs). I still have the recording as a reminder as to why all my fretlesses will be lined for the rest of my days

Forgot to take one with both of them. I'll try to do that tomorrow. They're almost identical other than that the new one is fretless, has 18mm spacing instead of 19, a buckeye top, and very slight variance between the new extended B headstock and the old one:

Nope, it can't transfer its tension to the tension on the speaking length of the string. I only got my fretless with one to match the one that the fretted already had (I bought that one used). They look kinda cool though, and you can use a Hipshot Xtender on a more useful string than the low B with the extended headstock.

I've got a 33" 6er and the most important thing to keep up with longer scale instruments tension-wise, at least in my opinion anyway, is a decent break angle on the nut and bridge, and solid transmission pieces, i.e. a brass bridge and nut.
Just good to get some feedback from someone who actually has one of those funky looking headstocks!

Bet you're pleased as punch with the new pair though, looking forward to hearing some samples on your youtube page.
Nice one on the the 4 finger plucking tutorial too by the way, very interesting, I'm a long way away from getting it just yet, but it's well cool!

The bridege end of that buckeye top reminds me of a perfectly partially melted tub of my favorite Ben and Jerry's flavor: One Sweet Whirled

I regret selling that bass........the ONLY bass I regret selling.

Thanks. I've found just using a taut string will compensate for a scale difference. I have a .135 Elixir on the fretted, and it's crazy tight- so much so it creates an almost chorus-like overtone. I'll get some fretless tunes up probably in a few weeks once I get the hang of fretless back a little (and once my new amp arrives, as I'll be ampless until then).

That's my second favorite after Phish Food- I can't find it anywhere anymore though, so I figured it went to the flavor graveyard. Can you still get it?
