My next bass is going to be a Smith!!!!!!! To me, a Smith is as classic as a Fender Jazz/P. How do you like your Smith compared to the Elrick

You can order one from Rob Elrick if you want to. His ramp prices recently went up though, so I had my last one made by Jon Maghini of M Basses for a very low price- he did a great job as well.

Honestly?
They're both different instruments but I actually preffer the Elrick. The Smith has that midrangy sound that you can only get with a Smith, it cuts like a knife and the slap sound is great.
The Elrick punches like Chuck Norris :D, very tight B string but is not muddy at all (you can actually hear the note not just a "boom" sound), great all around slap and fingerstyle sounds...... I'm partial to the Barts. It's very quiet and it records great!
I'm happy :)

Hey everybody !
I've been playing mainly Elrick for over 10 years now, I didn't even know there was an Elrick thread, I guess we are expanding =), I'm glad to know I'm not the only one out there !!.
After trying one of his basses I wanted to order one, so I went to him at the '99 NAMM in LA, I met him and thought he was the nicest guy in the bussiness. We chat for a while, told him a little about me, he talked about his approach as a maker... good times !!
Then I said "Let me try some of this models here?, I think I know what I want you to make for me", and as soon as I grabbed the second one I said "this is it, I'm taking this one with me!", he said, "can you wait until sunday when the show ends?", and I said, "you are gonna have to come to my gigs this whole weekend to take it back with you".
He came to one of them, but we started very late and he had to leave, so I went back next morning so he could have it in exhibition, such a nice guy...

So this are my boys, the one on the right has been my main axe since '99, and the one on the left is the new born, for which I have a couple of questions and thought you Elrick specialists could enlighten me a little:

So do I deserve to be #24 or what? :P

Ok, enough trying to make this picture upload work...

Here's my dilemma:
What kind of pickups should I get to make the New Jazz Standard to sound more like a "jazz bass"?.
I know the NJS wasn't intended to be a Jazz Bass replica, needless to say, It's a very well designed instrument and capable of delivering a very versatile and full sound.
Still, I would hate having to buy a fender, or any other brand just to get that raw, midrangy epic sound that just cuts through in the mix.
I did a couple of sessions already where the NJS did the job nicely, but I found myself halfway through it switching back to my old '81 jazz 4 with EMGs. and everybody would go "Oooooh !! Now you're talking !!! Ok everyone, from the top!!!".
The NJS has a very well balanced sound but I'm guessing due to the 35" scale, the higher strings lack punch, very critical when playing fingerstyle and necessary when slapping...
Maybe I can compensate a little by using a thicker gauge.
It also has less output than most of my basses, and that would be a preamp issue.
But what else can I do to make it sound more aggressive, more "raw", make that Marcus Miller really come out more... Is It possible? .. or I'm just dreaming with the perfect bass again here?

I appreciate any help boys..

Huh?... I own four basses with 35" scale, and the two with the most 'punch' and 'girth' on the higher strings are my Elricks. I play mostly fingerstyle. Some luthiers don't like 35" scale because it can make the G string sound 'poinky', but that is not my experience with my two Elricks. :rollno:
