Beauty. One thing about this particular model is that if you do decide you want to swap out the pickups, I believe it is a spot on match for EMG DC40's which sound awesome and are my all time favorite pickup. I was gonna look for one for just that purpose, but have held back so far.

The one thing I don't like is that they all have plastic covers, which is really a cosmetic thing. I can't find any metal pickup covers for these either so it's a shame.
Seems on newer productions the model inlay is no more.
On my new D-4 the model is engraved on the truss rod cover.
That's the way my B-206SM is too, it's on the truss rod cover. I like the 12th fret inlay though, always gave those ESP-LTDs a unique character.

Newer models also have a slightly different layout for the controls as well. And I believe they no longer use rosewood.

So, it's become my fault they've taken off the fretboard model name inlay?I looked for a "dislike" button, but TB hasn't given us one of those yet.
IIRC, my D-6 was from 2014. It had model name inlay and no model name on the truss rod cover. But just now I browsed to espguitars.com, seems the current D series are still using model name on the inlay. Could be the D series don't get enough market penetration that they still have lots of older production stocks...

I know I received a new build of the D-4 purchased at the beginning of this year. Though when I bought my D-4 from the ESP site the photos up were still of the old model, I thought that's what I would be getting but that wasn't the case. After buying direct from ESP and getting the new model D-4 I went and found an older one on reverb as I liked the color scheme better. Here is a photo with the new model on the left and the old on the right. The new one has a Jatoba fretboard (old one is rosewood) and Mahogany body (old one is Merbau).
Thanks for the side by side! While I find both brown body colors and both fretboard colors quite nice the lesser contrast on the older one is more pleasing to my eye. New one is striking rally stripes while the original is a tasteful accent. I suppose there isn't a huge difference in how they sound?
How are you liking it? I have the same bass and ended up putting Bartolini's and Bart pre in mine. It's a tad heavy but a solid bass I think.
While certainly not huge there is a very slight difference in tone between the two. The new one is a little smoother sounding and has slightly better sustain. They are both set up to the same exact specs and play identically otherwise.
