  • Octave effects sound good? I'll always rely on my T-16 for that old school OC-2 octave down sound, but having octave up and Whammy like sounds should be great.
  • I can't see an envelope filter. Is there something useful and usable for bass?
  • Can the tap tempo be used with auto-wah and other effects?
  • What about synths? I usually couple octave down+fuzz+chorus to get into synth territory, but I've heard incredible sounds coming from the Future Impact and similar pedals. Is there something like that in the H9?
  • Are modulations (especially phaser and flanger) audible with bass? If not, do you have enough tweakability using the pedal and/or the app to adjust the sound?
  • Is it possible to rename presets, change their order or create your own custom list? I'd like to have for example 10 reverbs (presets 1-10), 10 delays (presets 11-20), 5 choruses, 5 phasers and so on.
  • Is it possible to have the same effect in more than one preset?
  • Is the built-in tuner usable? Can it replace a dedicated tuner? I'm just curious.
  • What about the looper? Tell me what it can and can't do compared to a dedicated pedal.
  • Should I get a H9 MAX or not?
  • I've read from Paul Cioks that you can power the pedal using a DC-5 300mA outlet set to 12v + green flex cable (which I have). Can you confirm?
  • I'm not sure my Dunlop DVP4 X mini expression pedal would work with the H9. Can you tell me something?

Rapid fire responses:
  • There are some good octave effects, but that's something people get picky about, so YMMV. I don't know if you'll get a very good analog emulation but you'll get some great digital sounds.
  • The consensus is that the filters aren't the strong suit, but it does have multiple filters---wah algorithms that can be assigned to envelope rather than expression and some other stuff (Modwah and Sculpt off the top of my head)
  • Yes, anything time-based can use tap tempo
  • You won't get anything like the FI for synth sounds. There are some fun sounds in there but they are limited.
  • Modulations are definitely audible (not too subtle) and can be blended with dry for low-end retention. Exact flavor of the mods is YMMV. Lots of tweakability.
  • Yes to all of this.
  • Yes, though I think maybe you have the question backwards? Each preset can only use one effect. But you can do multiple different presets using different variations on the same effect.
  • Yes, the tuner is good.
  • I don't have a lot of experience with the looper; I suspect it's okay, but it pales compared to my Infinity.
  • Yes, get the MAX
  • You need to have a reverse polarity (center positive) cable---which I believe is the green one you're referring to; note it's a 2.5 mm instead of 2.1 mm like most center negative---with that meets the power requirements. The pedal requirements are 9-12 VDC and 4.5 W. That's 500 mA at 9V or 375 mA at 12V. As always, it's possible you could get by on a little less power though it's not recommended. I have variously powered mine on the 9V 400 mA ports of a VL PP Mondo.
  • I don't know about that expression pedal specifically, but I do know the H9 has a feature to "calibrate" expression pedals, so I believe it is very flexible in that regard.

Thanks for the infos!
  • I use an analog octave down because I prefer that kind of sound, so having a digital octave up (think Pog) should be a good addition, but it's not crucial for me. Is there some octave up effect with decent tracking I can use for guitar-like chords?
  • I'm not a big fan of filters in general, that's why I don't have a filter in my board. Usually I rely on a phaser for funk stuff and other genres, I just love phasers with bass but the sweep must be audible, definitely not subtle. The multi effects pedal I'm using right now (Neunaber Expanse) doesn't offer many options for phasers and they're subtle with bass. Plus, having the possibility to use an auto-wah/envelope filter kind of effect should be fun, maybe even useful for some songs. It's not my favourite effect for bass but we all know it's very popular for a reason.
  • Synth sounds are not mandatory for me, I usually couple octave down+fuzz and sometimes chours or flanger and I'm happy. Having more options is always good though.
  • About the tuner. Is it good enough to replace a dedicated tuner? I use an ST-300 Turbo Tuner Mini. I keep seeing a lot of pedalboards with H9s AND dedicated tuners. Why?
  • I'm still curious about the looper but can't find anything good on YouTube. I'm not a big looper user but it's a great tool for practice and composing. If anybody have a good review to suggest, please link it here.
  • I could couple a 300mA with a 100mA outlets to power the H9, but Paul Cioks said it's perfectly fine to use just a 300mA at 12v with the green flex cable. I believe him to be honest, but I'm curious to hear other people experiences.
  • I've read some posts around and my Dunlop should work with the H9.
Thanks again for your help.

Rapid fire again...
  • Yeah there are definitely octave up sounds that, IMO, sound just about as good as anything else (maybe some POG/HOG connoisseurs will disagree)
  • Usually, being too subtle is not a problem for H9 effects, but the opposite: keeping them under control and finding the right balance.
  • There are definitely synth sounds to play with, whether they will be useful, YMMV
  • I think the tuner holds up against just about any non-strobe tuner out there. Strobe tuners I don't have any real experience with, so I can't comment on that. I don't have a dedicated tuner on my board; I have several multiFX including the H9 that can tune, and the H9 is the one that I use.
  • No additional comments on the looper, sorry
  • On the power thing, I will say that each of my two H9s did have an issue that required repair. In one case, I was told that something was blown and to be careful which power supply I was using; I had been using regulated 12V 400 mA on my Mondo which should have been okay. On the flip side to that, I would be somewhat wary of underpowering a unit, although I think it's entirely possible that it will work for you, as has been my general experience with high power-requirement pedals.

H9 question:
I'd like to find a good tremolo sound to reproduce some dubstep kind of choppy bass using tap tempo and different subdivisions. John Davis do a similar thing with Nerve but I have no idea about what he uses.
Is there a way to configure an expression pedal to go from quarters to triplets to dottet eights etc.?
A suggestion on which algorithm to choose would be great too.

Thanks.

Yes, that can be done. Use the tremolo / pan algo. Turn 'tempo' on and set the expression pedal to affect the 'speed' parameter.

Just picked up an H9 MAX amazing pedal and so much more Im in. I see some of you are using MIDI to control functions Can anyone steer me in the right direction To find a source to learn the MIDI thing?
I am a pretty experienced MIDI user, but it's hard to give a crash course. What do you want to do?

I do not have an Expression Pedal to use with it yet. Hopefully in the next week. I am looking at the Mission one designed for the H9 so you can use the expression and a switch. As to the MIDI I don't know what I can do with it I have a Boss ES-8 already but still have no Idea of even the basics of how MIDI works or what it can do.. I just use the ES-8 right now as a Programable switcher no MIDI out use..

The mission is what I use. Honestly, you will be crazy overwhelmed with the H9 once you attach it.

Ok So next Newb question How do you get in to where you set the source. Manual just says press the encoder and turn it to set the source but nothing happens when I do . So is there some secret code to get there ? BTW I do appreciate all the help so far and have read most of the thread but am going back to read what I missed incase the info I am looking for is there

Okay, so here is some very basic stuff that you might want to do. There are a lot of different types of MIDI messages, but the two simplest types for pedalboards are PC and CC messages. PC stands for “Program Change” and is basically for switching presets. CC stands for “Control Change” and is basically a way to change parameters, like a virtual knob or switch on the pedal. All commands function on a “Channel,” which is basically the way to say “this command is for this device and not that device.”

So you might want to experiment with sending a simple PC command from your ES-8. Go into your H9 to set the MIDI channel (easiest on the app, but you can check the manual how to do it otherwise). Set it to say, Channel 3. Then set your ES-8 to send something like “PC 10 on Channel 3.” That should get you to the 10th preset on your H9. (Although you have to consider whether things start at 0 or 1 when counting those presets.)

Once you figure that out, you could play around with CC.

Thanks for that bit of info Adamixoye. I will have to figure out how to get into that part of my ES-8 . Have been watching this Guy on youtube that is doing videos with this Woman that knows nothing about any of this and having her do the set up and it is really good . So once I get to the part of I can try this and see what happens. Now I just have to figure out how to set the source I know I am missing a step or two.

Ok one of those duh moments Have to be in the right place to get to the source setting. Now it is time to play with the ES-8 and see how that goes. So now I get it and the source is set and while I was In there I turned auto calibrate on for when my Expression pedal comes in tomorrow.

So an added question Anyone using Android when you log in how do you get to a non numeric keyboard on the phone to log in? Ok Sorted that one out too now on to watch videos
