Official GR Bass Club

Well I've successfully kept my GAS at bay for years, and thought I was satisfied with my rig...and then I learned about GR in the "simplest amp" thread. I could see myself ordering one of these cabs in the near future as an upgrade to my Avatar neo's, but my HYPERVENTILATING excitement is those "Pure Amp" 2-knob jobbies. But...none of the websites in the US "stores" section have them listed for sale. Has anyone actually seen one in the wild? Best strategy for getting my hands on one?

Into the wild :)

Just received my 350 amp and 410+ cab the other day. Along with my trusty Bullhead 1k these GR products are amazing.
Tone-wise, how would you compare the GR amp to the Trickfish? I also have a Bullhead 1K and just ordered a GR Bass AT 212 (none-slim). Hoping it's going to be a good pairing. Currently, I run my PJB C8 (8x5") cab with my Bullhead 1K and the tone is amazing.

Got my new AT 212 Today!

Admittedly, I haven't gigged it yet, however, at some serious levels here in my home, it's pretty bad-ass. Very even sounding cab. A bit less compressed than my PJB C8 (which is amazing in the mix). Just a bit more open I'd say. No rattles or anything weird. Just solid, weightly bass tone. Horn sounds great too with good highs w/o sounding brittle or thin.

The thing is just crazy when you pick it up. You expect so much more weight at heft that you almost hit yourself in the face with it.

You literally can carry it with one hand. Just insane! So far, far good (I mean GREAT)! More later!

Q’s for the GR players here:

Can anyone clarify the diff between the 212AT and the 212AT Slim? I get the dimensional part; but, there is an apparent power handling difference, which suggests the Slim has somewhat more potent drivers? The 112AT seems to have the same driver as the Slim. That just seems somewhat confusing. Why would the 112AT and 212AT not share the same drivers?

I’m a big fan of 112 + 212 modular flexibility, and could be interested in lightening the load. But, the Slim has a different footprint than the 112; which makes it less interesting from a pairing perspective.

Anyhow, amazing tech, even if the specs seem somewhat confusing.

I sent a message to GR Bass in Italy to try to clarify my Q’s. Here is the exchange FWIW. Not sure I learned much, and remain somewhat confused that the AT112 would have different drivers than the AT212.

The reason for my Q is that 112 + 212 setups are extremely flexible, IME. I have had this combination using Bergantino cabs for some years now, and am very satisfied with it. In this case, however, the two cabs would have different characteristics; which doesn’t seem like a good starting point.

Anyhow, here is the exchange.

Hello from the US.

Can you please explain why the AT212 has a lower power rating than the Slim cabinet? Do you have different drivers in the AT212 than are used in the AT212 Slim or in the AT112?

I am interested in an AT212 and AT112; but, concerned that the drivers may be different.

Thanks!

Response:

Good morning, the woofers are different therefore the slim version has 450w woofers each.
Not a better one than another but they have slightly different sounds.
Certainly the slim is the best seller both for the power and for the very compact dimensions.

The reflex of the slim is rear while that of the standard is front.

Thanks!!!!

They seem to be insinuating AT112 AND AT212 Have same drivers; the AT 212 'Slim' uses different driver
BUT by ratings/specs on website it looks like as you said AT112 Appears to have same driver as AT212 slim
and they admit a sound difference between either 212's.

Looks like you may need to save a few more bucks and get 3 AT112 and glue 2 together or by 212 slim and put AT112 on bottom when using both:)

I might be joining the club in a month, will submit my application if I do :)

Looking at the 2 x 8" cabinet but having a really hard time justifying the carbon fiber one.

I need another bass cabinet like a hole in my head (I currently own 8 cabinets) but I was looking at 2 x 8" cabinets and it seems the GR 2 x 8" is light years beyond the TC and Trace products.

It's also a tad wider so if your head is wider than 10" it will look right, I also like the fact they offer four ohm cabinets. The idea of buying a cheap 2 x 8" and then buying another one seems like false economy to me.

The thing is the price/weight differential is more justifiable for the larger cabinets, but another $480 to go carbon with the 2 x 8" and only lose 5 pounds of weight seems like a lot.

Those carbon fiber cabs sure are pretty, seems like the covers are a must and which ever one I buy I do plan on getting the cover.

ALWAYS buy the covers when you buy a piece of gear because chances are later on they are not going to be available.

I bought the super nice, padded bags for the four JBL Eon-10's I own and those are now so rare and sought after I could sell mine for a profit!

Will check in around a month from now if I do make a purchase :)

Do it, you won't be disappointed :)

Great news!!!

I've been keeping a secret project under my hat for the last few months but I have recently been told that the project is going ahead and that it's OK to spill the beans.

Months ago I asked John Files of Sonata Marketing, the USA distributor for GR Bass, if Gianfranco would be interested in custom building a 212 Slim combo for me. John was immediately intrigued and we discussed it a bit more. The whole combo will probably weigh in at around 32-33lbs, which I can still carry with one hand at my current age. I was basically envisioning an taller version of the AT Cube 800 combo with an extra speaker and the controls at the top (pictured below) to minimize any engineering concerns for Gianfranco. As an incentive, I told John to tell Gianfranco that if he accepted then I would buy two of the combos to make worth his while.

atcube800-jpg.jpg

John asked me which amp I wanted in the combo. With my Mesa TT-800 and Quilter BB-800 amps I pretty much have everything set at neutral noon and get a great sound. So I checked out the GR Bass Pure Amp 800 which only has gain and master volume, figuring I could get a similarly 'neutral' result and lots of power that matched the specs of the 212 Slim cabinet for the most part. I asked if I could get one combo with the One 800 amp and one combo with the Pure Amp 800. John informed me that the One 800 amp has a 'pure' switch that defeats all the tone controls and essentially makes it into a Pure Amp 800. Cool!!! Consequently I decided to get both combos with the One 800 amp figuring it was a BTHIANNITTNIANHI type thing and the built in tuner would be useful too. Plus I thought it would make things easier for Gianfranco productionwise to build two of the exact same item.

John eventually asked Gianfranco about via video conference and he accepted the challenge! It is fortunate that GR Bass is small enough of a company to be able to fit in custom work like this. Not sure of the current production status of the combos, but John gave me a delivery ETA of near the end of the year or early next year. I think the ongoing parts supply shortage may be a factor, and John has told me numerous times (and posted here as well on TB by Agedhorse) about the current ridonculous shipping times and rates. When I bought my 212 Slim last year I had to wait almost 5 months for delivery.

So I am excited! The last detail is to get one of those tiny wireless systems like Saramonic or Boss WL-20. If those work with my uke bass then all I would need to carry are my bass in the hardcase and the combo, and I could feasibly have the fastest setups and teardowns ever. It has always been a continuous goal of mine to take as little gear as possible to gigs, with light weight and fast setups but not sacrificing sound, power and quality. The 212 Slim combo would be a significant step towards that objective.
