In my opinion, while the UD is a good pedal for the price, the American is a good pedal. Mind, I haven't tried the Tech21 Sansamp Blonde it's apparently based on.I'm gonna succumb one day and get the American...
The hype on the UD was great, and while I don't use it much these days, for the price it's amazing! The pedals that it's competing with are oodles more expensive (not that that makes them inherently better), but all this talk of the American being far better than the UD has me intrigued.
These clubs are gonna make me get a bigger pedalboard!

If you're running the american/british as a clean preamp, do you have the drive all the way down? I've found that when there is no drive at all, it just sounds flat, but if I dont want to add too much drive onto it and make it sound distorted
