when I was thinking of changing out my the pre in my old 4-76 to an lh3, kirk told me that 85-90% of the sound is from the pickups, not the pre.

I am a new Lakland owner thanks to Happyface. A 55-02 to be precise. My question is how hard it would be to install a pickguard, both for looks and the fact that I suck with a pick and don't want to mangle the finish. Any tips/tricks/suggestions anyone can lend?

Congratulations and welcome! Roger at Jeannie Pickguard can make one for you. Lots of options. My fave it the J style in tort, black, or pearl.

Are they super hard to install? I'm terified of screwing my new investment up drilling holes etc.

On the 55-02 I had, I used double sided tape and glued chopped-off screw heads in the holes of the PG, so that I could remove it and not leave a mark. The guards from Jeannies tend to fit tight enough that you only need a small piece or two to keep it tight!

Sweet. So the tape doesn't gum anything up or anything like that? if that's the case I'll just go that route

It's very easy, but you could order without holes and double stick it.

Cool. Thank you all for your quick help. One more question if you don't mind: Happyface was nice (and honest) enough to PM me and say there were "multiple light surface scratches" that he had just noticed on the front of the bass. Assuming they're visible enough to bother me, which I doubt they will be, is that kind of stuff incredibly hard to rectify through buffing?

A P in a J housing? or straight P with a pickguard to cover routing? You can already get a pretty good P tone out of a 44-02.
