Well, I called MF today to see if they will ship to Toronto... no go!
My wife has been bugging me about what she whould get me for my up coming 50th b-day, I thought that perhaps getting a Ricky again, would be pretty cool...
Can't see it happening now...:crying:
Fishheadjoe

I read somewhere hear that someone had it shipped to an UPS store just across the border...then went to the US to pick it up. just saying.

Thanks for the info John T.
I am kinda ashamed to think that the RIC forums "think" that TB is not RIC friendly.

We are all BASS players...it's too bad a few like to bash other brands than "they" like.

Overall this is the most "friendly" site I've ever been on.:D

Thanks for all your time and effort John!

i notice that there's a few folks from the ric forums over here - welcome to talkbass folks :).

i'd like to mention a few things. in the conversation over there there's talk of the poll in this thread - i'd like to make a statement regarding that. there's no guarantee with polls that the voter is being honest with regard to the poll topic. i can see who has voted in this poll and i see a few folks who voted negatively who were specifically, by their own participation in this thread, NOT involved in this sale.

this is most definitely not a scientific poll heh.

i'd also like to mention, since it has come up, that talkbass is most definitely -not- anti-rickenbacker, or any company for that matter. shoot, i'm very much a serious rickenbacker fan, as can be seen by my basses, and i haven't play 4's in 18 years.

a few facts about talkbass.com : we have over 140,000 registered members, a large percentage of whom are very active (around 30% or so from what i've seen, although it varies), and get about 10,000 posts a day if not more. if you see 3 or 4 folks who post negatively about a company - any company - they most certainly do NOT represent the site as a whole, or even a large enough percentage to even consider as meaningful.

i hear it often from folks i talk to at namm shows - almost every corporate rep that i bump into gets a little reserved when they find out i'm an admin at talkbass. when i ask what's up, they invariably say something along the lines of "it's not a very <insert their company here> -friendly site". apparently, the posts from the haters/trolls/honestly-not-liking-the products -minority- ring louder than the vast majority of the folks who -like- the products that are offered.

and that IS how it is, folks - no matter what company you are with, no matter what your bass-related product that you offer, the vast majority of the folks here at talkbass with an opinion about it view it positively, if they are not outright fans.

unless of course you sell crap. in which case shame on you.

Guy, when I called and talked to RIC customer service yesterday, I specifically mentioned to them that that issue had come up on at least one bwss. It happens because the route for the mute is deeper than it needs to be, so if the three screws under the bridge above that pocket are over tighted, that's what happens. That's also the main reason for tail lift these days.

I seem to have the same flaking paint around the bridge experienced by another poster. It's very mild, but it's there.

Guy N., are we talking flaking or some small finish cracks..? My MID 4003 from MF has what seems like a couple very very tiny what-I-would-call finish cracks around the treble side of the bridge that are really unnoticeable and I could certainly live with; no actual paint flaking though...

Stereo, the main reason that TB is not viewed as a "RIC friendly" site on the RIC forums is due to the discussions that center around the subject of RIC trademarks being ripped off in the form of copies. The discussions I've seen here have bashed RIC and CEO John Hall pretty hard for their efforts to enforce their trademarks. They're the only major guitar company left that hasn't lost most of their trademarks to other companies, and it's because of their sometimes heavy handed enforcement.

I would say EBMM leads or equals at least in the trademark fight as well. And I don't blame either of them. I do however blame the people that willingly and knowingly buy the trade marked copies.

Without the market (customers) for these fake basses, there would not be any fakes.

My 2 cents.

Sorry to hear that Guy. I know you have been waiting for you new bass.

They (RIC) pretty much view the whole world as not being Ric friendly. You can say 99 good things about Rickenbacker and then say one bad and you are viewed as not being Ric friendly. This is manifested over at the RicResource Forum where people are booted for voicing differing opinions. And most of those booted are real Rickenbacker fans.

They view me as being Rickenbacker unfriendly because I am honest and call things as I see them. I think they view you as Ric unfriendly as well. And we are both huge Ric fans.

That's a big trend now n days though. It's probably all political.

"If you're not %100 with me, you're my enemy"

If your bridge is out of downward travel you can file the saddle slots lower. The saddles are solid so there's lots of room, and the nice thing about Rics is they don't rely on break angle to lock the saddles down, so you can get the break angle as low as physically possible (while maintaining enough angle to keep the string in place) and not have any wobble.

Odd to hear about the nut issues people are having. Never gotten a bad nut from RIC yet, they always set the slots a shade high but that makes perfect sense to me.

Remember about the binding: it should be a bit creamy, not stark white; the new finish just keeps it from oxidizing to a yellow haze in parts of it.

I will share this with all of you. Of two dozen Rics I have played most were new or like-new, and I have play-tested several new ones at Wildwood Guitars in the last year and a half. Mostly 4004s, but 4003s and 4001C64s as well. The ONLY flaw I found on ANY of these basses after serious inspection was on one of the 4001C64s, which had fairly serious tailpiece lift. The others were all top-notch. There was also a 4001C64S that had weird "play marks" on the neck where the satin finish was polishing into a slight sheen, but apparently this is inevitable with a satin finish of that type.

OK, there are two things going on here. One, I misunderstood you. I thought this was another "you have to wait two years to get a Ric" post, which I've seen many times on here and which I'm not sure was ever true for prospective customers. Two, you seem to have a lot of knowledge about Rics (far more than me), but are you sure about that two-year production backlog? Both these dealers have had several 4003s in stock for as long as I've been checking (2-3 years). I just wonder if they're able to order and Ric is able to deliver instruments with that much precision timing if the delay is really two years.

Ultimately, it makes no difference seeing as the customer is able to get one right away (something a lot of folks seemingly weren't aware of), but this struck me as curious.:)
GregC, I was trying to understand what you had meant, and I see you were talking customer, where I was talking dealer. Yes, there is still an almost 2 year backlog. As for your dealer having basses, "order averaging" would insure he always had stock without ordering when the ones he has are sold and having to wait. JH has stated both 4003 FG and JG are made most frequently and may not experience the full ~2 year delay.

My binding is creamy.

and... looking sidways at the nut I can see a little bit of light under it.

Oh well, I really don't like the black nut anyways. Might change someday for a white/creme one.

Thank you:D for the saddle thing, I have had a RIC since the 70's and never thought of that fix:hmm:

I almost ordered one and I'm glad I didn't. There are certainly some QC issues with Ric, despite all the Rickenwaffen say.
Actually the real RIC quality issues (other than bthrem's 2011) seem to be the ~March 2010-made basses. The others have been pretty good with just setup type issues, or personal preferences. I think the visible wood joint lines or tail lift (unfortunately) are there on all the basses and therefore to be "standard" in a Rick.

Is this how the rest of you see it?
