Here's my opinion after owning this RIC since Thursday. After doing a setup per the instructions posted here, the neck is very straight and the action is low. I really am liking this bass.

I checked mine was made Feb 2010, however, I do not have any of the problems described here for the 2010 models. No yellowing/nut problems. I do see the lines where the body wings are connected and the lines for the 2-piece neck, but I cannot feel them.

This has turned into a gigging bass for me. I really like the sound and how hot the pickups are. I have to admit while I know the neck is wider than my Jazz I don't really mind it. I find the depth fairly slim IMO.

Good luck to everyone on the returns. I'm sure MF will make it right for you. I've have had good success with them over the years.

considering what the substance of nearly every one of this guy's posts has been, i'm surprised anyone here has even engaged him at all.

if i still played 4's i'd be all over one of these things - i love the color. and i have pimp rics already.

Yeah, this does make me sad.
And all the more proud to keep my '03 Ric.

The neck is stable as a rock on it, and it's never had a single issue.

I could probably never sell that one anyway though, as I used my late father's money to purchase it. I found out years later, it was built the same week he passed on.

P.S. - I hope I'm not perceived as the "Rickenwaffen"(!)

That just gave me a bit of a chill. Keep it the rest of your life. Sorry about your fathers passing. I also miss mine.

Here's a word of encouragement to all you new Rick owners.

If the colour MID wasn't in fact selling well, RIC would drop it in a heartbeat. They have enough trouble keeping up with orders without running off batches of unpopular colours, and Mr. Hall seems quick to cut out any 'dead wood' in their production schedules such as left-handed and fretless versions, so I don't believe that MID is unpopular at all.

Most Rick fans seem at least to appreciate the colour if not admire it.

Glad to see that so many folks are getting the opportunity to try these basses out.
Mine's a January 2010 build and it's fantastic IMO. I payed a lot more for it last March, but wouldn't have waited for anything, I don't regret spending the money at all.

Sorry to see that there were some serious QC issues, probably linked to meeting production deadlines, but still disappointing. I can understand the huge let down upon opening up a much anticipated new bass and finding something that should have been caught before it left the factory.
As long as each customer gets satisfaction in either a return or swap. that's what really counts at the end of it all.
It does seem that there are a lot more votes on the poll than actual new buyers, that's not fair to the OPs intent.

Hopefully everyone will get what they're looking for.

And the new necks are only about 1/16" wider than my 1976 and 1977 basses.

Regarding the idea that the less popular colors have lower resale value, in the case of vintage fenders the less common (less popular?) custom colors are the ones that fetch the highest prices. Just a thought. Personally I love the midnight blue.

i notice that there's a few folks from the ric forums over here - welcome to talkbass folks .

i'd like to mention a few things. in the conversation over there there's talk of the poll in this thread - i'd like to make a statement regarding that. there's no guarantee with polls that the voter is being honest with regard to the poll topic. i can see who has voted in this poll and i see a few folks who voted negatively who were specifically, by their own participation in this thread, NOT involved in this sale.

this is most definitely not a scientific poll heh.

i'd also like to mention, since it has come up, that talkbass is most definitely -not- anti-rickenbacker, or any company for that matter. shoot, i'm very much a serious rickenbacker fan, as can be seen by my basses, and i haven't play 4's in 18 years.

a few facts about talkbass.com : we have over 140,000 registered members, a large percentage of whom are very active (around 30% or so from what i've seen, although it varies), and get about 10,000 posts a day if not more. if you see 3 or 4 folks who post negatively about a company - any company - they most certainly do NOT represent the site as a whole, or even a large enough percentage to even consider as meaningful.

i hear it often from folks i talk to at namm shows - almost every corporate rep that i bump into gets a little reserved when they find out i'm an admin at talkbass. when i ask what's up, they invariably say something along the lines of "it's not a very <insert their company here> -friendly site". apparently, the posts from the haters/trolls/honestly-not-liking-the products -minority- ring louder than the vast majority of the folks who -like- the products that are offered.

and that IS how it is, folks - no matter what company you are with, no matter what your bass-related product that you offer, the vast majority of the folks here at talkbass with an opinion about it view it positively, if they are not outright fans.


unless of course you sell crap. in which case shame on you.

I wasn't part of this deal, but I have owned a few Rics in the past (and prob will again someday). I hope not too many gave up too easily on these amazing instruments without following through and getting satisfaction for an awesome price... stuff happens along the way, but good companies make things right when they've gone wrong, and I believe Rickenbacker is one of those companies.

Mine's paid for and shipped, arriving at my freight forwarder in Ohio thursday end of day. God knows how long it will take for it to make the trans-pacific journey to get here, hopefully a week or so. So I won't get to see it, or take pictures for a while yet.

Re: swirling finish on my MID

I owned a jetglo from 2007 that was finished flawlessly. The one I took delivery for on Monday (manufactured 3/10) had swirling reminiscent of a used bass on a darker finish. This should not be the case on a new bass. Neither should a chip in the finish as noted earlier. I love the sound of a Ric and really want to get this right.

After reading though most of this, those with major bass issues seem to be in the minority, but that doesn't mean the rest of us received perfect basses.

It's not too often we can sample and compare a few dozen new bass purchases of this caliber (even though I wish it was a mapleglo sale!)

My take on the MF blue Ric sale is the blue Rics weren't selling as well as the other colors so MF had a backlog of blue Rics. The ran a sale to clear out the inventory.

So you can go online and buy a new Ric for $1300.

Not bad.

And if you don't like your bass then return it.

I almost ordered one and I'm glad I didn't. There are certainly some QC issues with Ric, despite all the Rickenwaffen say.

If you guys haven't seen it yet Ben Hall (production manager at RIC) offered this explanation of yellow binding on the RIC forum, and it's exactly what I expected to hear (I wasn't sure because I didn't remember when they made the switch...):

I would be shocked if the 4003's that people received with yellowing binding were built within this past year. I'm positive that those are the last of the conversion varnish instruments that we sprayed before we switched entirely over to the new UV finish. In fact, 1025 (June 2010) was the last run that we used the varnish on. This stuff was prone to rapid yellowing, regardless of the conditions, like being in a case for months on end. I have yet to see any evidence of yellowing in the UV polyester finish, nor do I expect to see any. However, time will tell.

I for one appreciate his willingness to share this and it might explain to some extent why people are getting on better with 2011s in general.

I have a cleaning question. What do I use to clean the body of the RIC? I know to use the cloth provided but what about stuff the cloth won't wipe off? For example, my guitard asked to handle the bass. Apparently with greasy/dirty hands and put prints on it I can't get off.

I know RIC recommends pure carnuba wax but will that remove the prints? Thanks everyone.

I got a sample of "wonder wipes" with my recent new MM Sting Ray. I am very impressed with their cleaning abilities. They also have wonder wipes polishing wipes. From my recent and personal experience with this product, I highly recommend them. I believe they can be obtained on the MF web site.
