Official Orange Club II

I'll take a pic of my rig next time we rehearse, but I just joined a new band and my Meatsmoke was just too filthy/way too much top end. I managed to score a Terror 500 for $400 and an Ashdown MAG810 for $200 - it levels the room! Best British/Chinese $600 rig I could have ever asked for!

Got Dayum, you scored yourself a seriously awesome rig basically, like, for free... Nice one!

So....consensus is that the Terror Bass 500 and 2 SP212s is great? I'm after a nice "classic" sort of tone that can go loud when needed.
:)

TBs and SPs are more modern sounding than AD and OBC, but you could tweak your sound to be classic.
2 SP212 are going to be louder than 2 1x12 of other companies, but not as loud as one 4x12 (surface) and they are going to be heavier.
But they are modular and small, which makes up for that.

Lucky dog. I never see deals like that! Those Meatsmokes gets lots of great reviews, but I wonder if it should have some sort of disclaimer like "For Spinal Tap use", "No Mr. Clean here", or something like that.

It's badass and probably can clean it up in a lot of circumstances, but my 4 string just put out wayyy too much top end to properly tame it (it's also tuned to drop b). My fiver is a little tamer in that regard, but for this band, I really wanted super clean, super mid-rangy almost fusion tone.

Yeah, I honestly wasn't looking either of 'em. I saw the Terror posted on a FB gear exchange and after a couple messages was driving down to the city to meet the guy. The Ashdown was listed as an ABM, but when I got it home realized it was a MAG, but for $200... I'm not complaining. The CL listing I found had the pricing listed as "$200 FIRM." Not a problem lol. I'm shocked at how nice that cab is. Throws out way more low end than my Ampegs... Of course I happened upon a Megoliath a couple week later for not much more money, so I'm currently up to my ass in 10" speakers.

Joined the Orange club last February. Got the TB500. Up until October I was using it strictly as a power amp for my Big Muff & Sansamp Paradriver, plugging into the FX loop return.

Background: I had an SVT that I rarely ever got to use because we were doing so many out of town/country shows that I had come to rely on my tone from the Sansamp. Then when we had a show locally I was so annoyed hauling that heavy beast that is the SVT, and then only using it as a power amp since that was the tone I was used to, It had to go.

So anyway, in late October I turned off all my pedals and decided to go straight into the Orange and see what I could come up with. It's been a bit of a struggle because when it sounds great to me at home it was just mushy when the full band was playing. I thought, maybe I should swap the tubes. So I've been reading all the threads about tubes swaps and so many people have been saying JJ's sound way better than the stock tubes. But when I opened mine up it actually came with JJ's as the stock tubes...

Well, I just found and finished reading the Bass Gear article that was posted somewhere on this forum and now I'm excited about really tweaking my TB eq knobs now that I know how they actually work. I had been running them all near noon and kinda felt like it was a bit murky, and now I understand why.

I plan on keeping the Sansamp on my pedalboard for the away gigs but when I can take my head, I think the Sansamp is just going to become my backup. I also recently ditched the Big Muff in Favor of a Darkglass B3K. Major improvement there but now it's time to really dial the TB in.

Anyway, I'm Excited about my bass tone again!

Feel good customer service story of the day:

Ordered a TB500 back in 2011. After using it a few months it blew a fuse at rehearsal. Didn't have the best luck finding the proper fuse at the local shops, so I got lazy and shelved it for the time being. Fast forward 3 1/2 years, and I finally decided to order new fuses online. To be fair, the band didn't last and I hadn't been actively playing during this time frame; I'm not THAT lazy!

Sure enough, the TB500 wouldn't go from Off to Standby without blowing the fuse (and dimming the lights a bit). Being a bit bummed that the warranty period came and went while it sat on my dresser and after reading numerous reports of early TB500s having a few problems, I decided to play it safe and send it in to Orange. They gave me the address & RMA #'s, etc, and said they'd contact me about payment and then ship it back to me.

So today just before I leave for work, the doorbell rings and there's my Terror Bass sitting on the porch. They haven't sent me any bill; it just suddenly showed up. Didn't have time to open it, so I spent the day at work wondering if it was actually fixed, or that they didn't just decide it was dead beyond hope and sent the corpse back to mock me.

Glad to say it works like a champ! No idea what the problem was, or if I'll actually have to pay for it. I assume they'd probably bill me BEFORE shipping it back to me, yeah? Unless they just figure they know where I live and have tons of evidence that shows I sent it in. Just seems strange. Maybe it was such a simple fix that they didn't have the heart to charge me. Highly impressed with them either fixing it for free, or having a huge level of trust in regards to payment. Also a fairly quick turnaround; 3 weeks to the day, during the onslaught of the holidays. :bassist:

Orange already had my heart when I fired up the TB500 the first time, now they REALLY have my attention!

In v1 (the right tube) consider NOS tubes like a Mullard CV4004 or RCA/GE Blackplate 5751. I don't know about v2, if it's a simple phase inverter, or if the tube quality matters in that position?

I've had an AD200Mk3 for years. Rock solid. It is the only amp I won't consider selling, even though it can really only pull off one and a half tones. Fortunately the sound is unique and is very hard to duplicate, and I love it.

With a passive bass, the AD200 is incredible. Active basses, not so much, in my experience. The limited EQ makes bass and cab pairing very important. Since you can'y EQ out annoying frequencies you have to rely on your bass or cab to shape the sound. I had a Stingray Classic and the high mids were obnoxious and couldn't be dialed out unless I ran it through a different cab. Similarly, the mid bumb of the DB Aguilars can't be tamed, which could be great depending on the bass and strings etc.

The cabs are good but not worth the money new. They are heavy and large, and they not lined. They sound SOOOOOO much better lined. They go from sounding boomy and rough in the mids and highs to smooth and fat all the way up. My 410 was also wired wrong from the factory. They should be lined, wired correctly and sell for $750. All that being said, the 410 (lined) and the Ad200b Mk3 sound amazing together.

From my own experimenting, v2 seems like it controls the EQ section. I've got a NOS Sylvania in there now which has a bit of a (pleasingly) ragged sound to it, and found that it gave my EQ section a little more of a nasty quality. The response of the knobs seemed to be smoother overall with the JJ in there initially.

Also, Augment, glad your amp is working! It certainly seems a little strange/suspicious regarding the lack of billing from Orange, but hey, your amp is back and it works. So just enjoy that for now! Either they'll track you down for payment or they won't...

What do you mean by Lined?
