What an amp... finally got to use my Terror Bass out in the open. Been practicing with an old-fart band for well over a year now, with a bit of a break for covid. Now we’re on our third lead singer, and things are starting to come together.

Lead singer asked if we could play for a birthday party (all adult) for a friend of hers. 15+ people. Well, heck yeah. I’ve played to bar crowds smaller than that.

Brought the TB500 and an OBC112. No need for both cabs. Mids all the way up, bass at about 9:00, treble all the way down. Started with gain straight up, master around 10:00. Had to turn down a little, even with a moderately aggressive drummer. Used my ESP RB-1005, Aguilar pickups, Noll pre, EB flats.

Not only did the band get compliments (and tips!), I got compliments on my bass sound.

BL tells me that the Orange sounds “cleaner” than the Carvin BX1500 in the practice room. What’s funny is that it’s considerably dirtier. I think he means he can hear it better.

We have another tentative gig coming up. Maybe we’ll be gigging again soon, even out here on the left coast.

I purchased a terror bass a month ago and couldn’t get it to sound dirty at all until yesterday. I was using my main bass a Geddy Lee Jazz with rotosound strings and it sounds really hi-fi for some reason, and it would get stupidly loud. I tried my Marcus Miller Jazz and I was able to get it to overdrive very easily.

Last night I wanted to use my Orange rig, but it is actually overkill for that stage. So I thought the Orange 4 Stroke and 1 OBC115 should work out pretty well.

Boy was I right. That amp is ridiculously loud, even at just 8 ohms, and the OBC115 can handle it without breaking a sweat. For bass I used a Squier Contemporary Active Jazz in satin white and an Ibanez SR870 in autumn gradient.

The master was set at 9:30 and the compressor at 12:00 and my volume was perfect. If I would have taken both cabs the master might have had to be set to about 8:30. Seriously impressive amp and cab.

OBC115 users: Would this cab be overkill for using as a practice amp in an apartment? I've been wanting one but worried that it might be too loud to get much use out of right now. I'm not playing gigs and would likely sell my rumble 100 practice amp to fund the cab. Thoughts?

In my opinion and experience with this, yes. I lived in a large apartment complex two years ago and owned (still own) a OBC115. While it depends on how loud you play and your amp setup, it has a very massive bass response and will resonate through walls quite clearly. I was at a point where I wasn’t using it and eventually moved it to a buddy’s practice space where I could actually move some air with it and its a huge difference. Playing through it at low bedroom levels only produced a pretty sterile and lackluster response for me. Even now for home use I use a Orange 210 that’s propped up off the floor to ear level (seated) and that’s more then enough. But it all depends on what you can get away with as far as volume levels - its a killer cab though!

Don't forget about the 4 Stroke 300 as well. That amp sounds and feels more powerful than my GK 700rb II and way more powerful than my Genz Benz NEO PAK. I originally wanted the 500, but couldn't find them anywhere or they were too expensive. So I settled for the 300 and quickly realized that I really didn't settle at all. That amp has plenty of headroom for me.

As long as your amp and bass have a volume knob, there is nothing to worry about. Plus when you are ready to gig the OBC115 is a pretty stout cab. But I should add that it is also pretty cumbersome to move around. I ended up putting casters on mine which made a world of difference.

LOL! I bet.
After a couple of times moving mine around and hitting my knuckles on walls and doorways I thought "Screw this, I'm going to Home Deport for some casters".

Haha I went the caster route too after I found I permanent spot, some of the best money I’ve ever spent music related. I can only imagine what delivery drivers must be thinking when they are shipping these things. Even with the side handles they are still too awkward and heavy to move comfortably.

I also was skeptical at with the 300, but when I got it I still only turn it up to 4 clicks with the comp kicked in a tad and it holds its own with our loud 3 piece rock band. I wouldn’t be afraid of taking it anywhere. Not all watts are created equal.

Orange horsepower is Clydesdale power not SPP.
Shetland pony power and the OBC 115 is a cracker.

Thinking of getting the TB500 to replace my Hartke LH500 which has blown (cockroach under the power section shorted out a bunch of components). I already have the obc112.

I see some people say they only good for rock/hard rock, I can't really believe that is completely true. The LH500 had the Fender tonestack I don't recall using a different eq setting if I was playing rock or pop/rnb. Anyway it would be good to hear if people have used the T

I mostly use it in a heavy/rock setting, too, and dig the preamp tube distortion. But that Clean switch is a welcome addition for, well, cleaner sounds. Hit the Clean switch, dime the Master, and add volume via Gain, and you should be fine in all sorts of styles. The 500 W are plenty, especially with loud cabs such as the OBC 112.

I tracked down and bought the only new 4 stroke 500 on the net, and paid full price. That will power either some bag end s15 cabs or the new genzler 212t ceramic cab. I’m expecting big things out of this amp.

Congrats. It’s a very flexible amp, don’t be afraid of the compressor boost circuit. Once I figured out that, abs then shaped with eq it really was an impressive piece of kit.
