Official Orange Club II

I was playing around with my AD200B and a couple different cabs this past weekend. I have a pair of the OBC115 and I have a custom 2x12 with Faital Neo's in it.

Generaly I was running the AD with gain at about 2 o'clock and tone running about noon. I had I finding I thought was interesting. I always used the 2x12 with my vintage Bassman head. It always gave me a sound that was fat, round and very clean. With nice deep lows. Not surprisingly, the OBC115 was not as extended in the lows, but had a lot of mids going on. But what surprised me was the natural overdrive of the amp itself. It was very clear and pronounced. While the 2x12 overdrive was just not there. Just mostly clean sounds.

I was wondering if the same happens with the OBC410 vs the 115.

(I'm likely not calling it by the right name - basically two 2x10's, one behind the other.) I've been eye'ing it, but figure if I go another Orange cab, I need to do the big 4x10.

Haven't been in FW recently, but hopefully with things opening back up will find my way there again soon.

They are called SP410 (smart power).
If you part away with it, colour me interested ;)

Put the Bass Butler back on my main board:

It works exceedingly well with an SV-Pre in front for additional tonal shaping and slight OD to the clean channel. MBD2 is doing low-gain distortion duty, the Butler caters for my heavy distortion needs. Couldn't be happier. :D

Does anybody own both the AD200 and the Terror Bass MkII and could give an objective (or as objective as a subjective comparison can be) opinion on how close they are tone wise?

I have been trying to find something that is easier to move around and maintain but every time I try a lightweight amp they just come up lacking. Call it a lack of bloom or in some cases it's hard clipping when playing hard…

I know it's always a case of trade offs but the trade offs always seem too much in comparison to the benefits.

I've had both, currently own an AD200B and owned a TB500 a few yrs ago.
It's STILL not in the same grandstand as the all tube power of the AD200B. It's in the same ballpark, but doesn't have the "bloom" as you say.
I find the same thing with any other amps.... be it class D or lead sled.
I really liked the TB500, but not enough to make me use it over my SVT that I had at the time.
Now, owning the AD200B, which is a great amount of power for my needs, it's wayyyy easier than the SVT to schlep..... and sounds unreal, but, no, it ain't like a class D in portability stakes

yeah I'm coming to the realisation that the tone I want comes with a less than convenient weight.
To be honest it's actually not the weight that is my main concern, more the fact that modern tubes seem less and less reliable. I've had a power tube lose its vacuum suddenly mid rehearsal which shut down the whole amp. Now I'm a bit scarred from the experience.

Yeah, fair enough! I s'pose that's another benefit of the terrifically light class D amps..... its VERY easy to carry a back up amp. I've only had to use mine once. (I've had a tube amp die on me once, but that was before class D amps were commonplace. It was an old 70s silver face Bassman100.)
The only time since lightweight amps were about, was an Ampeg V4BH, that, I think, cr@pped itself due to very poor power in the 'venue'. I had a Mark Bass LMII in my car, so it was a very able replacement that night.

Re modern tubes..... I had my AD200B serviced and it's power tubes replaced, biased etc, a year ago, and I've gigged it probably 20+ times since, and haven't had a problem. But I understand your trepidation.
I dunno if I'd let it hold me back from keeping my current all tube amps (Fender Super Bassman, AD200B and a V4B reissue... so, 2 using 6550s, and the V4B uses 6L6GCs)
or buying a new one, as I've never had any problems getting them, but if I did have probs, perhaps it would.
Awww mahh gerrd, I hope this doesn't happen!
As good as the Bergantino B|AMP is, it AIN'T a proper toob amp!

Oh I will always keep the AD200. I have told my fiance that when I die I want her to remove the speakers from my OBC810 and stuff me and the amp in it as a casket :D

I'm probably going to stop trying to find a new gigging amp and just keep using the AD200. Maybe buy a Rumble as a gig bag backup and be done with it :)

I thought I was on to something with the Aguilar TH700 but found it just really didn't play nice with heavy pick attack. That was a deal breaker for me.

You've tried the TH700 with the GAIN completely OFF?
I still use my TH500 regularly, love it. But it's EQ, GAIN and DRIVE controls after totally unique.
I completely understand re finding a suitable lightweight amp... it's VERY hard, and, for me, here in Hobart, Tasmania, where we're isolated, an island state, and there's 2 musical instrument shops in town, both of which have possibly half a dozen basses and even less amps, finding an amp that suited me involved buying the amp (usually 2nd hand) and selling it on if I didn't like it.... hence I've KEPT what I DID end up liking. The Aggy TH500, I've had for about 10 years, the Bergantino B|Amp, I didn't really gel with at 1st, but the firmware updates eventually hit the spot, and altho I don't remember which one it actually is, again, when I found something I liked, it's stayed with me. I'm very happy with it now and have no qualms taking it to gigs. Altho I'll always favor my all tube amps.

The AD200B is such a sweet spot for me tho. Pretty much the perfect amount of power, without TOO much weight, and the tone...... yum!

Yep Gain off was my favourite setting however I still found that when I used a hard pick attack it got this kind of unpleasant square clip sound (clip light never went off). This happened across a few basses both passive and active. When playing softer or fingerstyle it was fine. I would have thought it was just me being picky but even my fiancee commented and she often can't even hear bass in songs unless I point it out to her :D
