4b should have a reverse P pickup though, right? Also, did any MIJ charvels come in trans colors?

At some point they switched the P pickup configuration.

no. it is an old as hell USA body, what would be known in 86 as a 2b.
and the neck? could have been anything in the parts bin.

That's what I was thinking after visiting www.usacharvels.com, but wasn't sure. And thanks for the info. My first guess was that the neck is also Charvel based on the trussrod nut, heel width, and construction....I doubt the pencil markings on the heel confirm anything? I thought there might be a slim chance that its an "employee" or "shop" guitar(bass)???

I'm still rockin my Crackle finish 3B with EMGs. It's my main 4 stringer.
I usually play the Ibanez BTB with the poplar burl top, but when I want to rip out a 4 the Charvel is always my go to.

My new Kellybird V. Sold the 4 string and bought a set of EMGs 40/P and a 40/DC and a BQS Preamp

if you look at a model series bass with the normal-p, it is a 86 only, in 87 up they went back to the reverse-p setup like Ibanez and others. On the USA bodies from the early 80s they always had normal-p unless the customer wanted it different.

I think it is a 93 but I can't remember. sometime in the future if you look the serial will say J3 or J4 as the first 2 digits.

Anyone know anything about Charvel guitars ? A friend is selling what I think is a 1989 Model 1A for $100

i would have to see a pic cause i dont think they made a model 1A in 89 only 86-88 with the small logo.

serial number is 297382 It has 3 single coils and a maple board

Yes red with a black pickguard. Im not sure what head stock it has but the neck plate says Made in Japan and has the guitar shaped logo

I see Jackson guitars in pawn shops locally frequently, for very low prices. Almost always less than a couple hundred bucks and in excellent shape. All different shapes, too. The basses are WAY more rare around here, although Nashville Used Music (storefront location in Nashville) has them come through from time to time. They've got a couple weird ones that I don't really want, and they've had a 3B I should have bought. GC carries a couple Jackson basses, but they're almost always the imported ones...which are great instruments for the money. But because of that, prices stay rather low and while I'm sure you can flip that guitar, I wouldn't expect to make a whole lot of profit on it.

Jacksons are easier to find then 80s Charvels though. If this thing didnt have 3 single coils I would have bought it already.
