Guy that traded it to me has owned since the 90s, and he bought used.
So not sure year of mfg. EDIT: Gibson customer service said 1997. This one has definitely been played, and needs some TLC such as new knobs, but she sounds great. Number please?

RE: Is Gibson still making Tobias...

OK - I just couldn't find anything on Musicians Friend or other retailers that used to carry the Killer Bs - several sites said "discontinued" AND I didn't see any buttons on the Gibson site that lead to Tobias - found it on a search, but not from the Gibson site - kind of strange.

Hey guys,

In case no-one has ever tried an early/pre-Gibson Classic 5 through an Aguilar Tone Hammer, well, WOW!!! :) The frequency boosts on the older basses have a pretty wide bandwidth, so if you mix a bit of onboard EQ in with some bass and treble boost from the ToneHammer, you get a really modern sound with heaps of punch and bite, but it still has all the fatness and warmth of the bass itself. What more could you ask for! :)

Cheers,

EG

from gig 7/23/10 at Ontario Mills Mall, Ontario CA.

I am really digging this bass. Perfect tone for the genre we play (classic rock, backing mostly acoustic guitar, some electric guitar).

Scroll the page down and look to the left side. Tobias in the list under the “Guitars” column.

Pedulla Club #45

I posted this in November. I wonder if anything has changed since (thought it does not appear to have).

...Can't find a new one anywhere, so I contacted Gibson via email. Here is the response I received,

"Unfortunately, Tobias models are not in current production. The company is currently in transition, and we do not have products or information available at this time. Thank you for the inquiry."

So now you’re a member of both the Pedulla and Tobias clubs. What can I say, you have great taste in basses! :D

As an FYI to the Tobias club:
Don't know how many of you have the natural, oil-type finish on your Tobias, like my vintage Growler. I have tried a few guitar polishes and oils that I had around the house in attempt to restore and protect the finish. On another TB forum, I came across a product called Williamsville Wax, which is a mix of beeswax, lemon oil, and other stuff. Well, I applied it to both the body and fretboard of the Tobias and am very pleased with the results. Absorbed quickly, made wood grain more lovely, added just a bit of shine, and left no strong smell unlike the gunstock/lindseed oil I had tried previously. I bought Williamsville Wax off of Amazon and now highly recommend it. Probably works on poly finishes as well, but haven't tried that yet.

I can't believe I haven't posted a pic of mine yet.

MIJ Tobias Standard. Only 400 made. This one is factory fretless and doesn't have a mark on it!

Here's a question, how do you tell if a fretless pre-Gibson serial is a Japanese or California or New England (I read someone back east in new England made them too?)

Is there any way to tell?
