How do I distinguish the Japanese-made TUNEs from the Korean copies? I'm hunting for the 5-string Japanese made (TWB?) model, and I don't believe that this could possibly be what it is I'm looking for: Invalid Link Removed.

If Sam Ash is carrying it, it's Korean. There are no large retailers that carry Japanese Tunes in the States (at least that I'm aware of).
And fellow Tune fans, what the heck is up with this. They brought back the Maniacs, BUT they're now being made in Korea! That is ridiculous. Check it:

The only obvious way to tell them apart is the 'Made in Korea' sticker on back of the headstock. But it wouldn't exactly take much to peel that off! The only other way to know 5 years from now if you're buying an original MIJ or a new Korean is to research the serial number, right? Are there any other ways to tell these apart??? A Korean Tune Maniac.... That's heresy!

Sam Ash got rid of their inventory of TUNE bass guitars a while ago. I bought two, sold the four string and kept the six. I have four string "Bass Maniac" that was made in Korea, replaced the J pickup with a Delano put on some flats and it sounds fantastic!
Would it be worth it buying a Korean-made TUNE instead of holding out for a Japanese model? Is the difference that significant? My Traben is Korean, and I still love it. What's the benefit?

It's the same deal as MIA, MIM, and MIJ Fender instruments. They're all mass produced using CNC and automation, but there's obviously tighter quality control, higher grade lumber & materials, and more human attention/care taken with the American made instruments. The same goes for the Japanese vs. Korean basses. I've owned both, and while the Korean models look every bit as good as some of the Japanese ones, there's a lot of differences in tone, feel, construction, and overall quality.
I have a Korean TWB53 coming in the mail any day... was lusting after a five-string bass, saw it on eBay and had to go right ahead. I'm pumped!
One big difference could be resale value. What's the difference in pricing on Korean vs. Japanese? I'm looking at what appears to be a TWB63 and I can't figure out what it might actually be worth without knowing country of origin. Sam Ash was selling the five string version for $399 new.

You got it all wrong. Beleive or not Korean Tune basses are now the originals. WSC company from Korea is the owner of the Tune name. As you can see they do own the full naame :Tune Guitar Technology". The Japan Tune basses are actually copies. High end but still copies. Japan made Tune bases can not sell outside Japane because their name "Tune Guitar Maniac" (see the diffeence) is copyright infringement.
WSC was always making tune pickups and electronics and as the major creditor of the original Japan company aquired the name in lieau of money owned to them.

I own an Alembic Stanley Clarke '86.
I suffer when I have to get this bass out of my
local home wet, full of snuff smoke ...

I have seen bass players like Les Claypool, Roger
Glover ... they have one, and they sound really good.

I just bought a second hand Tune Bass Maniac 4 strings for 400$ bucks. One thing that am not sure is: is it a Korean made or is it a Japanese one ?
It's a black one, 24 frets, brass nut, the bridge is some kind of HIPSHOT A STYLE BRASS with the Tune brand name on. I don't have any pics to post, so, here's the closest one that i've found on the net, everything from this bass is the same with mine. Pls, take a look, just scroll down a little bit.

Massive differences in pricing. Tune Bass Manic basses are boutiques made to order and start at around $3000. I can't speak for they're quality personally but I've heard nothing but good things about their basses.
