Hi. Hoping you can help.

I am a big collector of bass and guitar and have a really interesting
tune bass, that I have not seen before.
BIG sound and a delight to play - just can't pin it down.

I've seen one of those before. One of my students had one in the late '90s in Japan. It's obviously similar to the Bass Maniac and Zi bass models, but different electronics and woods. It's one of the few Japanese Tunes I've seen with a rosewood fingerboard. Otherwise, I don't really know anything about it.

It's my first time on this forum. Can anyone help me identify what I think is a Tune Bass Maniac from around 1992?

There is no sign of a model number or serial number but there is a number 33 in the hollow under the nut cover. All hardware and pickups carry the inscription "TUNE guitar technology".
I'm a novice as far as playing bass is concerned, but this guitar is comfortable and has a great "feel" to it. The workmanship and finish are of a high standard. Guitar is around 20 years old and has general wear marks.
I am uploading pics to aid identification. Not yet worked out how to upload more than 2 so have combined them.
Appreciate any help offered.

Nice specimen! :) Yes, that looks like a Japanese TBC Standard. Invalid Link Removed is a scan from my 1997 Tune catalog of the specs.

The serial number would have originally been stamped in ink on the tip of the back of the headstock, but it's not unusual for the ink to wear off over time, unfortunately. The serial number on my own 1995 Bass Maniac is hardly legible anymore.

Many thanks Bassandbeyond. I had looked on your catalogues and thought it was the Standard TBC. However I could not be sure. Rather chuffed with the beast. Just learning bass and have moved up from a short scale Fender squire to the Maniac. What a difference!

Hello Steve (and all the other Tune fans), here an update about my new girlfriend! A month ago she was offered at the internet as a TBJ-41 for 450 euro. I wrote the guy a mail and told him that this was a SB-4 RRS and that I liked it, but his price was too high. Well, the bass is worth that money but the Tune market is not so good (great fot buying one, bad for selling one). Anyway, he wrote me back and said I could pick it up in Amsterdam for 200 euro.

The bass was in a horrible state, it seemed that it had never been polished. It missed one knob and the neck had a enormous backbow so they had set the strings into the highest position, they buzzed anyway. The pick-ups were unstable because of the dried up rubbers underneath it. I decided to adopt this poor one and took it home. I was very worried about the trustrod………

At home, I First took the strings of and start to polish the frets and nut with a regular metal polish. Wow, I could almost see myself in the frets, and they are in a good state. Then I cleaned the fingerboard with “grandmothers” solid dark brown beeswax. I like that stuff, it cleanes, protects and give a nice dark tint. You can also snif it if you don’t mind the braindamage ;). 90% of the scratches on the body seemed to be scratches in the dirt-layer so after polishing the bass it looked almost new! Wow, what a beauty, I like that colour!

I ordered three new identical knobs, new black pickguard screws, two chrome Gotoh curtpins (there were two ugly gold coloured curtpins on it) and replaced the rubbers underneath de pick-ups. A new set Ernie Ball 3834 (coated bass strings 0.45-100) did the rest.

Now it was time to turn the trustrod……….. A little shakey I started to turn it against the clock, each day a little bit. And yes, it worked!!!!!

Everything is allright now and the Syncron plays very well. I can't wait till my first gig to play it.

I also have two new Bassmaniacs, a TB PSW (well, its more yellow after all those years :hmm:) with EMG pickups and a beautifull purple sunburst STB. I can send pictures of these if you like.

Here a pic of my new Syncron (I noticed that they are very rare, not much hints at Google), I'm very pleased with it.

I have a TUNE TBJ52 FR. It was the first bass I owned (after renting a cheap knockoff brand 4 string for a year). I got it for my middle school graduation present from my dad who bought it off of his friend who bought it off of another guy and so on.

Never seen a Tune painted like that, but I like it! Nice bass, and for a great price. It's always fun to bring a bass back from the Abyss of Neglect (cant' seem to find it on the map at the moment, but it's out there...:smug:) and it comes out looking like this! I once did the same think on a '95 Ibanez ATK for $100. Enjoy!
