I can see that. I've had a few stain basses... I just like how "bright" a gloss finish looks on a fine piece of wood... Which reminds me, I *really* need to Publish photos of my Zons.

I just put Dunlop Nickel strings on my Sonus and it sounds AMAZING!!! Great complement to the bass!

My Sonus Standard (which I prefer way much over the fretted Special I owned) sounds like a Jazz bass on steroids but also has the edge to cut through two distorted guitars without the slightest problem.

Sadly we only had time for one take of each, and had to run a line direct from my effects board to an Ipod to record because the camera had broken! apart from that....in the 7mins we had to record them, i had fun

We go way back, my Zon bass and I. I received it in 1985, bought directly from Joe when he was still located in Buffalo, NY.
A little history: I saw an ad in Guitar Player (no Bass mags back then) for this amazing looking instrument. Immediately I wrote away for a catalog, price list and where could I try one out. I got the info and written on the PL was a little note telling me to go to Manny's here in NYC. I go - and they're puzzled. Apparently the distribution was not yet in place. I called Joe, told him I was serious - what to do. He asked if I could get to Staten Island. I said of course. His friend owned a company called Earth Straps located there
and Joe was willing to ship a bass down for me to try. Arrangements were made, the bass came in and I went over and spent an afternoon with it. I knew I had to have one! The rest, as the saying goes....Four months later my Legacy appeared at my door. It was my go-to for many years and I played the daylights out of it.
Back then the pickups were proprietary single coil, narrow aperture Barts and the control setup was V-T for each. Hardware was all black Schaller with a Hipshotd drop-D tuner. The entire bass is Pearl White - it's like white metalflake. No fancy wood tops yet.
I am currently in the process of preparing to ship it back to Zon for a complete overhaul/refin, and in a few months should have it back factory fresh and good as new! I am really excited about that. It'll be great to have it out with me once again.

First, that is so cool! Glad you're able to get an overhaul. Are you going to change anything?
Second, and a little OT, whatever happened to Earth Straps? I really loved their stuff. I still use a leather Earth III strap that someone gave me way back in college (thinking it was mine). I also had one of those clear plastic straps but unfortunately the length adjustment slots kept tearing through and eventually I couldn't use it. But it looked great under the lights.

I'm currently gigging with my Sonus Custom 5 and finding that slapping is tricky due to the narrow string spacing. I've been woodshedding to try to overcome this -and have had *some* success... but I was wondering - Am I the only guy with that gripe? I love this bass other wise - huge sound, great even tone...

Sorry, I'm a 4 stringer, even though I don't mind it, yes, the string spacing on my Sonus is narrower than my Sadowsky and my Warwick...
Nope, you're not. That's why they make the 519 and now the new Sonus Custom that also has the wider spacing. I'm spec'ing one now for later this year. Played one at NAMM and fell in love with it.
Firstly, @rulyøngo:Thanks! I'd like to leave it the original color - I hope they still have it available. But I'll be sure to post full shots once it's done.
ModuMan:Thanks again! I won't change a thing. I wore the frets out and damaged the fingerboard so it'll be a new board after some neck adjustment for relief. Performing that work will require a refin. I had already made a slight change when I ordered this bass. Originally the neck pickup was closer to the neck in its standard position. I had just seen a Ken Smith and asked Joe to move it closer to the bridge like the Smith spacing. I remember speaking to him prior to his shipping it and he said it really rocked with the shift. I have nothing to add!
And that's a good question. They were around for quite some time as I recall and their straps were excellent! They made quite a selection - I remember those clear plastic ones too! They had glitter/flake, multi color patterns, various furs and really nice leathers. All the desirable "rock and roll" variations. They just seemed to "go away". I don't remember the guy's name that Joe knew but they were very accommodating and I got to take all the time I wanted. Too bad they folded - they had some real nice stuff.

I mean : Is the spacing difference just a matter of different bridge dimensions ?

I'm pretty sure the neck would have to be wider at the last fret. The width at the nut may be the same though.
