Uh I've chosen too many controls for my bass, and Joe says I have to choose between going to push pull pots or having controls "jammed together so tight that [my] fingers will hit more than one control at a time". I've opted for sticking to the original design unless the electronics won't physically fit inside the cavity. I really hate stacked controls and push pull pots.

So what are the exact specs of this beast? Sorry, I may have missed a post by you stating these.

There were a few factors. First he would not have been able to use the Polyfusion preamp. Secondly, and more importantly he drilled the holes in the bass and THEN remembered how we were going to do it. He would have built me a new one, but if I can do it with a volume and a blend, I can also do it with the standard setup

She's the fretless love child between a 3 way marriage of a TJ, a Sonus Custom Special, and a Legacy... :D

Sonus/TJ body shape, set neck, 26 position fretless with extended cutaway, Custom pickups (not TJ's) with radiused housing in Special position.
Guancaste body with Bubinga top.
16.5 mm spacing.

I think that covers it...

Wow, and leave it to a local to create such an extreme custom combination to the originals, which were conceived of by Californians also (generally). :-) (Manring, Johnson, Zon, so forth).

But fretless and 16.5mm spacing to boot? That love child is going to be *fast*. Can't wait to see it.

I have something on order myself (a Vinny-oriented order in my case). Waiting since June. I dreamed about it last night in very vivid detail. First time. Perhaps that means something's near complete. I can hope.

why did you go set neck rather than bolt on? I find that the bolt on necks give me greater access to the upper reaches of the fret board

Not at all- I have a set neck, 36 fret TJ5 and the access is SUBSTANTIALLY better than on my bolt-on TJ6. The bolt-on heel is very thick, so I think his set neck design is a sizeable improvement for upper fret access.

So do I- and comparing my TJ to my TJ, the physical thickness is actually less in the set-neck. I think the Vinny gives a false impression because of the body shape and smaller cutaway.

But there is a reason they offer two options. :)
