its a really blonde buckeye burl. i was hoping for something a little gnarly, but this thing is gorgeous in person. the photo is a little filtered by the photograper. makes the grain really jump out. here is the glamour zon shot.

Keep in mind that there's nothing official about any of these clubs (even if "official" is in the title), so really you can give yourself a number if you want one,

They may not have the new design in 5 strings yet. I'm not sure.

Assuming the new ones have the same hole pattern, they have 5 holes/screws, each roughly 1 inch behind the saddles underneath the string (so at roughly string spacing).

There are no direct bridge replacements. They all require drilling holes. Hipshot's require drilling holes a little closer to the nut, otherwise the saddles may not reach to intonate the higher strings.

It is my understanding that they moved to bolt on necks because most customers wanted bolt on necks. But they will do set necks on request. Michael Manring's newer VB4 (Earl) has a set neck. I got a chance to see it up close this summer. I like the set necks. They are much more comfortable when one is playing in the upper register.

I`ve no previous experience with Zon/EMG, but guess Joe Zon has tested them and decided not to choose. They`re widely available and he wouldn`t suffer the occasional delays he experiences with Bartolini.

IMO, since composite necks have an inherent zingy sound, classic EMG`s should add too much treble. Again, I`m just guessing but would be something similar to Modulus.

I don't think he was a big fan of EMGs.

I had a set in my 4 string with a JPJ set up at one point years and years ago...I hated it. But then I hate EMGs, so it isn't that shocking. It is exactly what Papersen said- too much treble, too harsh, too angular. I hate EMGs in a Modulus for the exact same reason.

If someone likes EMGs in a Modulus, though, they might like EMGs in a Zon. It just isn't for me.

I'm saying because I put a few months ago new EMG-X on my Spector and they sound pretty good, but on the other side, I know that graphite necks tend to be harsher sounding...

I am actually testing my Zon but it has a natural medium freqs boost which I don't like.
Step 1 : preamp replacement, I have already ordered a East pre (thanks Angus for the suggestion) and I'll let you know what happens once I'll install it.
Step 2 : pickups replacement.
Step 3 : bass replacement.
Too bad this Custom sounds way much darker than my Sonus 4.
