By the way I did check out your art a while back and the paintings made me feel like I was standing there or made me recall memories in my life .Awesome display of talent !Thanks it was a very nice art show.

Hard rock you say? OK, I cooked this up just for you tonight : EQ is pretty much flat, about 75% bridge [J-type] pickup, switch notch on position 3 for Zon's voodoo midrange notchy thing. There's some unintentional overdrive on the input channel from running a little hot into the DI.

I probably should have used the fretted for this, but what the hell

Busted out the old black Gibson SG for the guitar parts, haven't ridden that sled in a while

I couldn't play guitar if my life depended on it. That major 3rd they throw in the tuning confuses the hell out of me every time.

^ hahar I hear you! there are plenty of cats who tune it differently, of course. If I were going to start learning all over again, I'd probably do either straight-fifths [a la Fripp] or straight-fourths tuning.


since I had the black SG out and it makes me want to play lounge music as well as metal, I tossed this together as well, nasty timbre courtesy of GarageBand

Went to my local theatre to watch RUSH Clockwork Angels screening happening at select locations across the nation tonight .Pretty epic Fender Jazz sound! He doesn't use those new wave lite weight neo designs he just goes straight into the board and uses the PA for his rig these days -actually for quite some time now. The old line array bass rig . Sansamp RPM/palmer speaker emulator/Avalon U5 DI, blended as needed on a nightly basis depending on the room by the guy back at the board .Pretty huge tone! ,would like to hear many basses thru it .

I saw that show tonight too with a neighbor that is a RUSH head. I thought the sound on the new stuff was pretty bad. My ears wanted a break from the wall of jumbled sound. Their old stuff sounded much better and they looked happier playing it.
He had great tone from all his basses they were hard to pick out in the mix and the vocals sounded buried too. Could have been the theater I was in but I was bummed by the sound. Visually it left not a single place for your eyes to rest. The sound was the same.

Great guys and players. Just wish I could have heard them more clearly.

Youd think they could of kept the camera shots longer than two seconds. There was nice high def shots here and there. At one point Neil is doing some fab stuff but its not in the mix you could see it but not hear it. Then there were points where you could hear the bass very nicely and it was great but yes agreed it could have been done better than it was.i want a Rush concert where they dont ever take the camera off Neil for a second.

Actually, I thought that Geddy was playing through an Orange AD200 and a pair of Orange 4x10's for the last couple of tours. I know that he was two tours ago, because I sent one OBC410 to him to use on the tour. They were off stage, though, so you didn't see them.

I didn't see any amps or monitors. It appeared to be all "in ears". The bass had that pillowy sometimes disconnected feel of going effects to pa.

Still a fun show and wonderful footage afterwards that shows what classy and genuinely nice guys they are.

I would like it to be more about music and not all the visual stuff although its an interesting show.

If you haven't already, you should check out Neil's Taking Center Stage instructional DVD. It covers every song on the Time Machine set list and has drum cameras-only performances of each, with the drum track boosted a little as well.

Yes I was going to add the Orange amp to the signal lineup because I have seen the Orange add with him it.When comparing that to what was said about his concert sound I did not understand where the Orange amp came in because he never stated where that was used in the interview or I missed it .Have heard good reviews on the Orange stuff and it seems priced reasonable.
Rush seems to be all about challenging themselves and progressing music.Trying to pull off the new stuff as accurate as possible.As much as a lot of fans love the old stuff they seem to feed off pushing into new boundaries musically, that's why they always play so much off their new releases every tour -cause that's what they are into and it keeps it fresh and challenging .
My favorite bass tone period seems to come from Subdivisions off the Signals album.(album :) kids see Wikipedia -album... also referred to as vinyl ) I moved to Modulus and Zon because I wanted a better playing bass and am always exploring forward with equipment advances.I feel the composite neck is an advancement in playability and stability.When listening to bass tones it is hard for me to move away from loving what a person is used to hearing .We are creatures of habit .Moving to a composite neck tone was an acceptance of wanting better playability and also wanting to create my own tone identity -not copy the artists I love. Some musicians I was jamming with the other day felt my Zon was the most musical sounding bass they had ever encountered .That was a good feeling to hear others liking your tone.
Back to Rush ...Saw the Clockwork Angels tour live twice.At points where Geddys bass took the spotlight it was a very impressive and unique tone all his own .Cone area,punch ,stainless steel jazz grunt come to mind as descriptive adjectives.I can honestly say if it were not for Rush being such a large influence on me musically I would probably not be buying a progressive instrument or playing bass still in search of that elusive tone that drives me when Iam down.The endless lifelong search for the elusive perfect tone.Only a handful of my friends that pursued rock music when we were teenagers play even for personal enjoyment to this date. Joe Zon helps make playing bass a fun experience.Seems to me its chemistry.
