Official Zon Club Part 5

Hi All,

I want to give an update about my Zons. So I called Joe today and got him live on the phone. He said my basses would be delayed a bit until the middle of February. I am hunkering down for the wait.

We had a good conversation on the phone about the basses. I went in eyes wide open with the stories of delays. I want to give everyone one piece of advice. I have found that calling someone and speaking to a real live individual is such a better solution to asking about your order than emailing. I fully expect Joe to take a long time building my basses, but just to talk to him and get some estimation on the new lead time gives me so much more reassurance. If anybody is still having trouble getting their order and has not called to speak with Martin or Joe, I highly recommend it. Be persistent but tactful and you'll get answers to your questions.

In the mean time, patience.

FWIW, this has often and always been the advice in this thread about working with Zon on custom orders... the main difficulty in the past is with international customers where the cost of the call and the time difference makes that extremely difficult. there've been cases literally where local advocates have been used, but that's not really a whole lot of help.

bottom line is, Joe's shop is notoriously overworked, and while Joe is a fantastic guy, and makes phenomenal instruments, he does need to get better about forecasting. i think it's just too often that customers have to have their finish date extended late in the game, which is understandably frustrating for someone who will clearly be anxious to get their new amazing bass.

Looks great! Didn't he build a run of composite Mosaic's like 7-10 years ago? I think this will be a good addition to the line-up. They do some great work with koa, man.

Very curious to hear their neck + Aguilar pickups. They aren't for me in other instruments I've heard them in, but I'm curious to hear that match up.

I'm surprised he didn't try and get my bass ready for NAMM and take it. It would've been a good show piece. :D

Just did a minor mod that helped quite a bit on my TJ5 fretless. It was never quite neck dive-y, but the neck was heavier than I prefer. I decided to switch out the standard Gotoh GB7 tuners with Gotoh Res-o-lite tuners, which are supposed to be about 24 grams lighter each. It was a bit of a hassle as the standard 14mm bushings that come with the Res-o-lites didn't fit, and I had to order 13.9mm bushings from Gotoh, which is the size they use on their GB 707 tuners. It was worth the hassle though.

It weighed 9.58 lbs before- it weighs 9.16lbs now, so close to a half pound is gone, all from the headstock. Neck is all better now. Fun fact I somehow never realized- Zon headstocks are mostly hollow.

Are there dealers located in the US or do you purchase direct from Gotoh?
