Oh crap! New Musicman Basses

Give me a chambered body version of any of their current line-up and I'd be heads over heals. My only knock on MM ever has been the trend towards the heavy side. Coming out with a line having 5-strings at or below 8.5 lbs consistently would be a game changer IMO.
Nonetheless, I like the idea of a passive option these offer.

You can always make one. There are some custom body manufacturers that can do it. You have to reverse the P pickup though to get the MM pickup in the right spot (i.e. put the south coil on the other side, leave north coil where it is).

A month ago I would have agreed with you.
I own a Sterling and a Stingray, and love them both(top notch quality/build/sound)
BUT, I just bought a Fender American Deluxe HH IV Dimension, and it is in every way
(as the Musicman basses) as good or better sound/build/quality.

Jaco had a lesser known track, called "The Cow." Unfortunately, it was a slap bass track recorded on a very modern nine-string bass, so the Fender purists destroyed the tape reels before anyone could hear. It was a necessary decision, to ensure that the "Jaco only needed four" philosophy would live on.

Yes man, I really rolled the dice and went for it. One of my best buds, Aaron Halfacre (a killer Detroit DJ) sold me that StingRay for $500. So I went for it. It's really great!

The mute was from an old Conrad Hollowbody bass. My cool dad, who's a really great tool maker helped me with that.

It's a soulful bass. Keep in mind, I've owed 19 Stingrays. I've lost a lot of money with this stuff. At this point I figured why not?

I do dig that Musicman keeps a tight reign on their hardware. They didn't lose control like Fender. I can respect that.

Musicman makes the best American stuff but sometimes I think it's very rockstar/California based. The parts are amazing but the shapes and colors are very west coast. I play with the Detroit Symphony and it's tough to sit in that world class orchestra with a Musicman. I wish they could make one bass that was walnut and ebony with no funny inlays or craziness. Just a serious, legit player model that looks like it belongs next to $40,000 double basses. At least a dark brown something.

I would love to see MusicMan build this 10 pole pickup but put it in the P Bass spot with their active preamp... but no e.q. just a treble roll off. To me, that would be the next evolution to the G & L l-1000 which was awesome.

He-he, James you're too funny. Your comments about MM stuff being "too California" cracked me up. It reminds me of the time I was hanging with a guitar player buddy while he was playing one of his many Strats. I just started to crack up and he asked what was so funny. I told him that it seemed to me that only a Strat could've been designed in a town next door to Disneyland - so I get your point.

As per MM I love the sound but the wonky looking pickguard has always turned me off. That and more importantly the weight and their 4-string neck profiles don't work for me either.

Have you ever demoed any of the MTD stuff? IMHO they're the best of both worlds. Jazz profile neck, MM-style pickups and they usually weigh in around 8# if I'm not mistaken. Great colors too. The Super 4 is the one I'm currently jonesing for.

Anybody gotten their hands on either of these yet? A couple weeks in and I thought people would be talking about them by now. I don't know if there is a dealer around me anymore, but was hoping to read some reviews. I have fallen in love again with my Fender P but was looking forward to these, since the feel and playability of my Stingray is so nice.
