Origin Audio Cali76 FET compressor (1176 inspired)

Hi Bongo,

thank you very much for your reply. So even that the Compressore and the Squeezebox are tube-compressors and the Cali76 is not and modeled in a different direction with the 1176 in mind the Cali has more character as the MarkBass? When I read your reviews and your top-picks and threads from other people about the Squeezebox I'm getting the impression that the Squeezebox is the real deal and hardly any compressor can get close to it. Is the Cali maybe more flexible about musical styles and the Squeezebox is more for the vintage Jamerson-style kind of stuff?
Best regards - Christoph

Yes--it's not the exact same flavor of character, but the Cali has more.

If you mean for a really fat tubey sound, that might be close to true. The Effectrode and Lightning Boy are real contenders though, with the Effectrode having cleaner signal quality and the LBoy having fatter tonal effect.

If you mean "in general", like "king of all pedal compressors", I'd say no. It would have to be a lot more noise-resistant for me to put it above the Cali, FEA, and other favorites.

I do think the Cali is _more_ flexible, BUT the Retrospec is not just a one-sound box. It's reasonably versatile.

The Empress is super clean, tight, with a slightly reduced low end. The Cali is more beefy and... emotional? What a weird word to use! But that's the word that popped into my head. Maybe I mean buttery, organic, things like that, as opposed to the more clinical and tight Empress.

got the Cali76 today and it definitely is a super nice comp. while it doesn't sound 'exactly' like my vintage 1176LN's or my UA 6176, it reminds me of them more than any other comp that I've ever used including my distressors or my aphex 661 and 651.

Can't wait for mine to arrive..........

Ran the cali76 at rehearsal today for the first time. Man, this is my fav compressor. I'm testing several right now to see what suits me best, and I think this is it. It is very large though

If the rumour is true that the Squeezebox is back into production, how would the two (squeezebox and cali76) stack up next to each other....in terms of their 1176 likeness? To be honest, I like the feature of the built in power supply of the "new" squeezebox.....I guess the new one is supposed to have an iec connector for standard 110/220 volt operation. That's a big plus for live applications. Thoughts?

Filling in with some buddies in Sturtevant, WI. Place is called Hiawatha Bar and Grill. Some country lovin. Cali76 was beyond expectations.

Nice. Used to place in a country band with Steve Stapler. Don't know if you know Steve? If you do, tell him Jason said hello. My long time drummer friend Jeff Werckle and I had a couple of projects....dirtyville was an original/cover rock project, havana honey was a jazz fusion project. Played with Jason Benny in whalebone for awhile. Played with Tom Mac waaaayyyy back in the day. Played in the RVC jazz band waaaayyyy waaaayy back on the day. Prob a couple other projects I've missed I'm sure. Used to love hanging at Mary's place on open stage nights. Really miss some of the musicians that would stroll in, Henry, jack, zilhart....etc. nippons too. Really miss nippons. Gonna head back this summer to see family. Nippons is 1st on my list of things to do when I'm back up north.

Back on topic.....prob gonna have to get me a cali76

There are some sample settings in the box with the compressor and a great YouTube bass demo with various settings for different styles.

You don't have to use their 18v. I have mine powered by my voodoo labs.
Your gonna love it
