overdrive/fuzz quest part 2

Hi John, have you tried the MXR El Grande fuzz pedal? I'm curious what you think of it and if you've found the need to modify it. I kind of like it for its full on extreame fuzz effect, but it's bit of a one trick horse. I'm thinking of getting a Source Audio ODF as a more general dirt box. Your input and guidance is welcome.

Hi John

What changes did you make to the Diamond Bass Comp?

I've been thinking of getting one.....but maybe yours is better?

not yet. these are the ones that I've built so far:

the only difference between mine and the factory bass comp is that I can bypass the eq, i have a hi cut switch, and have a 9V to 18V charge pump inside so it's always running at 18V when using a 9V power supply. but it sounds the same.

nope. haven't tried that one yet but IMO, you can't go wrong with an OFD. it's definitely not a one trick pony.

Hi John,

have you try to build the Barber "Small Fry" based upon Ivlark's layout, to compare it with your "Deep Fryer Deluxe"?

I'm really interested by your feelings about the Small Fry, and i will probably build it if it sounds cool on bass...

Greetings from France, and many thanks for your "Od-fuzz quest" thread and your useful modified clones!:)

The El Grande is worse than one-trick IMO, because you have to mess with an internal trimpot to really dial in a nice sound and find that one trick. And it has an INSANE amount of gain. The knob is very touchy and can't get past 9 o'clock without everything sounding like it's going to explode. Kind of cool, but very tricky for live use especially.

I haven't built the Small Fry yet. mostly because it's a fairly redundant circuit to the Deep Fryer, only it's not designed specifically for bass (although it probably sounds good with one).

but i'll probably end up building one anyway once I have more time.

Hi John,
Looking forward to reading your point of view on the BAT Black Forest I sent you. One more OD to add to your already extensive list.
Vincent

IMO, it's pretty nice. I prefer the throbak overdrive/boost by quite a large margin over it though, since they're both based on the colorsound overdriver.

I breadboarded the Small Fry tonight and gave it a quick trial. Very impressive, I may have to build it up with Ivlark's layout when I have time. No idea what the differences are between it and the Deep Fryer are, but it sounds pretty similar to John's clips.

Thanks for your answer, John.
I didn't know about the throbak.
I think I should give it a try.
Could you A/B it with the Black Forest and post a soundclip ? Yours are always great.

i'll try to soon, but i'm going to have to upgrade my soundcloud account before I do that since i'm currently out of space for it ( I only have 4 hours worth right now).unfortunately that's going to cost me another $120!

I'll kick in a couple bucks if you set up a paypal to donate to. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

Your pedal site/audio clips are a worthwhile resource.

Hey John, sent you some money as well. I really appreciate your research and sound clips. I hate when all I can find is some guy slapping and/or using ultra high gain settings.
