overdrive/fuzz quest part 2

What a great thread this is! The Barbershop is at the top of my list of dirt boxes to try, though that SA box is looking nice too!

Picked up a Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret today...not sure what think yet...so far it's just ok :(

One of my current favorites is the Mesa Flux Drive. Works great as an 'always on' pedal for me :)

Mark, I kind of feel the same about Marshall emulating pedals. That's why I had my British pedal modded by Mike Putnam to be able to add more lows to it. But Marshall amps just don't have a lot of lows to them, so it's only natural that neither would the emulation pedals. They have a great sound in their own way, but they do need some help in the lows IMHO.

In other news, I got my modded Greedtone OD clone back from John on Sunday after I accidentally broke it, and while John has built 900 other pedals since then and has bumped it out of his favorites, I dig that pedal like no other overdrive I've tried. Helps that he added a 3-way switch that cuts highs a couple different ways, which makes it great for going direct. But the things I like so much about it is that the tones match up almost exactly to my clean sound despite not having a tone knob, and you can adjust the amount of drive on the fly without having to adjust the volume, so you can go from barely on to raging pretty good by turning one knob.

I bought one of those Joyo Ultimate Drives on his recommendation, and for a pedal that cost me a little over $30, it's great. But it's got more upper mids that can't be dialed out through the pedal itself, and it requires volume knob adjustment as you up the distortion level. Not complaining because it's still an amazing value, and many will appreciate the added upper mids. But when I plug that Greedtone in, it's exactly what I'm looking for without requiring any effort on my part, save for initially matching volumes.

In the future I wouldn't mind trying a couple other pedals he likes, such as the Source OFD, the Barbershop, and his Gamma pedal (an excellent sounding pedal based on his recordings). But I still find myself innately drawn to his take on the Greedtone.

Sorry to talk about you in front of you, John ;)

I just drew up, built and tested a solid state (using JFets instead of tubes) Alembic F2B preamp. it's not a distortion but rather a preamp the F2B is actually a Fender Showman preamp and this little 1590B sounds nearly identical to the original F2B's that I've owned in the past. just like the Fender, the controls are volume, bright switch, treble, mids and bass.

I haven't mounted it in an enclosure yet, but here's a pic of the board:

That's REALLY cool! Now can you do a Demeter 201?;) How cool would that be to have both those awesome pre's right on your pedalboard. Nice work as always John.

John, I have watched your quest as you mowed through OD pedals with reckless abandon. Of the bazillion clips I listened to, the GBOD is the most amazing of the bunch. So much so that I am willing to kick the Pork Loin to the curb.

Can't wait to get mine.

Thanks for all you do. You have gone above and beyond the call in terms of working diligently to contribute to our craft.

Very enthusiastic +1 for this!

What's the "GBOD"?

BTW, was running a clean boost into the Jfet F2B the other day and it turned it into a pretty darn cool sounding overdrive (think cranked fender blackface amp), so before I box it up, i'm either going to add another one to the pedal so I can drive one with the other (that way it would have pre and post eq OD controls) or possibly just add a single Jfet clean boostwith no eq in front of it, so it would be a 5 knobber as opposed to 8!

..............so many options. what's a pedal tweaker to do? ;)

Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure it'll be ideal. Your work is stunningly beautiful John. You're one of the reasons I enjoy TB so much, it's kept me informed of all the cool gear, mostly pedals, and builders such as yourself out there.
