overdrive/fuzz quest part 2

I was finishing building a large LP record rack for my step son on tuesday and threw my (already bad) back out to the point where I can hardly move for the last two days. what a great way to start the new year. :rollno:

............so, being basically immobile, I decided to draw up a vero of a jfet version universal audio LA610 preamp since I love the original one in my UA6176. the schematic that I used was the original UA console's schematic, but it's for the LA610A module which has the same clickable boost and cut for the bass and treble eq, but not with the 3 selectable frequencies like the later LA610MKII. the low is fixed at 100hz and the treble is at 10Khz, but i'll probably mod it and drop it down to 4Khz or so to make it more usable with a bass.

i'm going to try and build it up to see if I can verify the layout (fingers crossed).

Hope your back recovers soon John. I feel your pain, I have a very arthritic lower back for only being 34. Pain doc said according to my MRI, I have the back of a 60 year old man. So I know how it feels to have issues with you back. Heal quickly!

got this one completed today and it's truly an awesome bass overdrive-the Barber Deep Fryer:

since I love the Deep Fryer V1 so much, I just drew up, built and tested a modded version of the Deep Fryer. I'm calling it the 'Deep Fryer Deluxe EQ' since I added external Mid and Bass controls along with internal pre-gain note shape and presence trimmers. I used Barber's Tone Pump and Small Fry schematics for the additional internal and external controls and it'll still fit in a 1590B enclosure.
I expect to have it completed tomorrow but it sounds great and can't wait to get it done.

I tried an Emerson EM-drive in front and behind the Jfet F2B yesterday. i didn't care for it in front of it at all, but behind it, it's awesome, so i'm going to combine them both into one pedal. it'll have a toggle switch to bypass the EM drive completely if I want to run it as a normal F2B, or click the EM in if I want to dial in a little or a lot of dirt/OD.

here's a quick clip of it clean (with slight tonal enhancement) and with a couple of OD settings. i'll make a better clip tomorrow (it slightly clipped the H4n's input in some places). I prefer it clean or with slight to moderate overdrive, since when you drive it too hard it can get a bit buzzy.

John, how do you like the Em Drive on its own? Both as boost and OD? I have a Recovery Effects copy that I like a bunch ( even though I've put it up for grabs).

it's actually pretty nice by itself. I built two of them. the 'mojo' version with the PIO caps that's going to be in it's own enclosure, and on the one in the F2B with Panasonic poly film caps, which sounds 99% the same.

John, do you own a electronic parts warehouse?

no, but my house kinda looks like one now. ;)

I made a BDDI clone, but i'm not all that crazy about the stock BDDI's overdrive sound and the scooped filters when you mix in the drive so i first built it stock and then modded the heck out of it. I changed the pre-gain presence control to a mids control, removed a lot the overdrive's fizzy decay and removed two of the filters in the drive side and like it a lot better now. the clean side is still stock. I also went vertical on the 1590BB with top mounted 1/4" and DC jacks. here's a pic of it completed:
