1978 Fender Precision - this was originally Sunburst, stripped, spray painted metallic blue, stripped again and I have just finished stripping it down and respraying it properly - 12 coats of sealer and 15 coats of Lacquer!
Seems to be all original except the straplocks and the covers which I've yet to fit.

Hey is that pickguard original too? I thought most if not all 70s pickguards were 14 screw, with one under the strings?
I thought that too and there is a screwhole under the guard but it doesn't look like it ever had a screw in it. It's possible it's a later guard but I'm not sure! Has a lot of scratching on it so it's difficult to tell.
I am certain on the neck, pickups and pots (as they are all dated). The rest don't have dates but most of the hardware looks correct (Fender branded Schaller heads, correct type of bridge, body markings remaining in pickup cavity are similar to those on the neck).

I'm afraid I don't have any helpful advice. I just wanted to say that Special is darn purty.
It was either find a vintage early 70s, or build my own..... so...
I went with an alder Warmoth body, birdseye maple neck, with a rosewood fingerboard, and abalone inlays. Both are exactly as they came out of the showcase, excepting the SS frets, and finishes. I decided to go with a BadAss II, to mimmick my uncles bass, and SD antiquities to try to get close to the original. Schaller old school TMs. CTS pots... I basically bought everything from Warmoth except the bridge.
The color was a complete fluke, as I was going for a dark charcoal finish, but the luthier wanted to try a new catalyzed conversion varnish, and when the black dye was added and sprayed over the white wash it came out purple... Naturally it should have been a no brainer that the black would just be a dark purple... but no harm done, I fell in love with it the second I saw it, and decided to finish it off just like that.
Once it was all together, I found that the 13th fret was high... so I adjusted the action to get past it while I decided what to do about it. I couldn't get my hands on anything to press it the rest of the way, nor did I want to ship it back to run the risk of it being damaged, so I just took a stone file to it till it was just right. All is well now....
The only thing left to do is to get some copper and line everything, and find a better way to keep the pickups where I want them.

if you want thin front to back you gotta go 57-62ri,
the mij 70s ri is a bit beefier front to back but is B width at the nut, they are NICE.
My '57 is a Skinny Minny...it weighs 8lbs 12oz.

Man, I LOVE that COLOR!!!! You need to patent that! Well, you can't patent colors, but you can copyright a color as part of a logo. (A piece of trivia for you: Kodak yellow is coprighted (it's spewc is something like dominant wavelength 555nm, @ 50% purity and 50% luminance, I forget what color space they used, but I think it was CIE xyY.)
Trust me, if I thought he could replicate that color again, I would do all my guitars with it. So at this point I've decided that going with a OtterPops inspired lineup will be the easiest choice... Next up will be a red gecko 6... or maybe a green fretless jazz 8..... ran out of beano last night....
