Double Bass Palatino Megathread part I

Need some help please. I have a really bad buzzing sound when I play an F, E, or Eb on the D string of my Palatino. I don't get the same degree of buzz anywhere else on any of the other strings. I have tried raising the bridge but it does not seem to help. As this is my first upright, I'm not sure what else to try. Any suggestions from out there. I have the bass strung with Thomastik Spirocore Light guages. Any advice would be welcomed....Thanks....Dan

Dan, I was lucky enough to get to pick mine up at a shop that has a great luthier, Link Removed. He had to do a lot of work on plaining down my fingerboard at the first position. He also did a lot of work with the TRUSS ROD! This is caps because it's the only upright bass I've ever had with a truss rod. My King has metal rods in the neck for strength, but nothing adjustable. I'm a big fan of knowing how to set-up your own instrument, but a truss rod on an upright? find a good luthier.

When I get a neck crack if its broken off then I work until I can get to fix back as cleanly as possible and then glue it. Then the tricky part. I roughter in a slot in the neck and spline it. Usually 1/8 to 3/8 slot and then glue the spline in. Sand fill if needed the refinish. If it were a bass broken at the tuners I would glue and then mill off an 1/8 on each side then glue and refinish. It really depends on the severity of the crack if I will spline and also the shape of the crack to. I once fixed a Martin D45 that was broken so cleanly in the middle of the nech that I took off the finger board and splined it from the top so you couldn't see it AT ALL!
If your finger board doe's pop off I would recomend Hyde glue. You can heat up the finger board and take it back off if you ever need to. Anyway there is my 2 cents.
Just thought if anyone doe's buy one try to get one break. The more pieces the harder it is to get it back in place. Wood fiber compresses and stretches durring a break.

I've purposley not used this bass for slap bass because of the number of you who has had the fret board pop off. I see no signs of it being loose and have pulled on it hard to see if it would come off. Do any of you slap the Palatino?
My inclination is to just take it off and properly reglue it but I have enough repair work to do.

I'll be slapping it tonight....um, that didn't sound right?

I brought home a cymbal stand last night to use as bass stand. But the threaded part that would screw into the back of the bass was too small in diameter.......does anyone know which brand of stand works/has the correct diameter threading?

DW. Drum Workshop. I had the same issue. My wife plays drums so I had a lot of different stuff around. The DW was the right size and thread.

Well I got through the gig without knocking the fingerboard off the bass. In fact, it was a great gig with this little bass. I have to admit I played in a much more civilized manner than usual.

Starting this morning I'm doing the rubber mod to the pick up. I'm pretty sure I'm going to replace it with a K&K. Also, as much as I enjoyed playing steel strings, I need some kind of gut string.

- They have 30's and 35's, but not a 34. [I know, pretty close]

- And, the last time I checked, I wouldn't file them under the Affordable category.

Hi everyone!

I use to play an upright in my highschool orchestra class my freshman and sophmore year. I regretably gave it up because I was too "hardcore" for a silly old upright (I'm scorning myself don't take any offense) and there were a few other elective classes I really wanted to take. But now that I've been playing bass guitar for over 7 years I am in a band and am really good friends with this violist whom I think would appriciate (as would I) if I started back up on my upright bass playing.
Sense this would be my first time picking up an upright for awhile I'm looking for something cheap but still useful. Now I'm sorry for any repitition, I only skimmed through the first few pages of this megathread for opinions on the palantinos arco sound. I'm sure someone has covered this already but 20 pages is alot of reading that I don't have time for. So again apologizing, and can anyone give me a short review on how this eub performs arco style?

I had a big problem at a gig last week - the endpin was slipping all over the place on the hardwood stage floor. This wasn't a problem before because I was lugging around a cymbal stand, but I've gone back to just holding the bass.

Looking back over the posts, I saw Nohandles mentioned the endpin ball from Gollihur, but I believe the shaft is bigger than 3/8", which is too large for the ball.

I guess a furniture cup is OK, but I move around quite a bit on stage, so it can get lost.

Any other solutions out there?

Get a small piece of rubber backed carpet, like a welcome mat or such. Drummers often bring their own carpets for such occasions!

JazzDude here is what I did to stop that. In fact this end pin ball is installed on all of my basses. For the Palatino though you have to remove the plastic point and have either a piece of plastic or metal turned to press fit into the post with a 3/8 diameter sticking out to attach the ball to. Never have any problem now and these balls really hold up.

Be carefull on carpet it will leave black marks.!

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I think the endpin ball would work well, but it sounds like a project to get it on.

I think I'm going to look for any kind of rubber or plastic attachment that would fit on the end without slipping off. Something like the end of a crutch or cane. Maybe a rubber baby buggy bumper?

At this moment my Palatino is in Philadelphia waiting for a trip to my place (Stockholm, Sweden), can't wait to test it!
Thanks for all the tips about pickups and such. As this is my first vertical bass ever, I guess i'll have my hands full in beginning, but a pure sound never hurts eh? =)

Duh! I never thought of that? Oh well mine has the ball on it now.
I just got an Acoustic Image amp, boy does' the Palatino bark through through this one. Can't believe 400W and 20lbs. Is anyone else using this amp? How do you set the controls?
