Quick follow up...thanks to all for your input on my entree into the Wilkins bass world. I’m now the proud owner of this austere beauty!

TalkBass is just the best! I was able to discuss the bass with it’s original owner who spec’d and ordered it from Pat. Also got some good advice about pricing and doing the in person trade that got me the bass.

Excited to be joining the Wilkins family with a WRT-PJ4 that I should be receiving next week. Pat has been so patient and great to talk to. Pics coming but it's the copper/"root beer" bass you may have seen on Reverb! Can't wait!
Just installed some TI jazz flats on my Wilkins P5. WOW!!!! Let me repeat it again Wooooow
These Wilkins P and P/J's apparently take nicely to flats. I put La Bella Bass 760FGS Gold Flats on my P/J 4 and they are, as you say, WOW!!!! Especially tight and rich and punchy in the 3 piece classic rock band.
I just bought and received my first Wilkins bass. It's the copper (root beer) P/J with Audere preamp. It is taking me some time to adjust to the adjustments but I'll get the hang of it. I will tell you that in the loud (Marshalls) band I primarily bought it for, it cuts through like a hot knife through butter. And that's with a pretty crappy old Hartke 410 driven by a cheap TC amp. So far I absolutely love the sounds and the feel of the bass. The neck is perfect...thin, no dead spots. The action low, the weight perfect and the fit and finish is just what I expected. Pat has been so nice and patient. We had a little grounding/shielding issue that he fixed right away.
It came strung with his strings but I'm going to experiment a bit with some other nickel rounds. I have flats on a Fender P that I'll keep and use for those times, but after reading the above I'm tempted. Flats these days are so bright and the comfort and full sound might push me to try them too. But for now I'll keep the rounds for the grit I like in the rock band.

Any interest in a straight trade: a PJ for a P? I would like a P bass. I've had three PJs and would like to go to a regular P bass.
I have a nice WRTPJ 4 and I love the feel of it but don't feel the need for a J pickup on a P bass.
Neck is 1.75", rosewood board, white with tort guard.

Pat has done several basses for me, always awesome work!
Pat custom made me this beauty and I am truly in love! It has the P bass pickup in the neck position and the Music Man style pickup in the bridge position with a Bartolini preamp. Both pickups are hand wound by Ulyate Instruments at Pat's recommendation and this thing sounds incredible. He got me the abalone inlays, the roasted neck, literally everything I wanted.
Pat's work is as good as people say. I've played several Lakland and Sadowsky and owned a '76 Fender and a Mike Lull; Pat's basses are just as good if not better than any competition!
