I already hear that! :roflmao: This one was just five hours or so up I-5 from you, but I bet they come up in Bigfoot Country even less often than in the Central Valley. We do have one of the standard dimension 215s up here with (what I think are) Eminence drivers and an Earth head that may have my name on it in the near future.

I scored the 215D yesterday in anticipation of my first club show IN A DRINKING AGE :woot: with a band that plays entirely too loudly :roflmao: were it my band, I'd ask the others to just back off their volume a bit, but it's not, so into the arms race I plunged. I don't mind, as I've wanted this particular cab for years now, and it should suffice on its own when I start playing my own stuff hopefully next fall.

I've been having a good time reading the offerings here. Good stuff, and could become a pretty good data base for the old Peavey gear that will become hard to find, maybe sooner than most of us are thinking. So don't be shy to post your gear, your knowledge, and accrued wisdom about it all... And some of the old gear may still be seeing use in another 30 years. How cool to have a sort of technical reference manual stowed away in the Talkbass Chronicles. Yeah, :):cool: pretty cool.

Any chance I can get a number? This my backup and/or drummer monitor amp. I throw a Darkglass Harmonic Booster in front of it, and it's even more amazing, lol.

I just put my Headliner 1000 in a new 3-space rack that came in today. The rack I already had was too shallow; this head is deeper than I expected.

I pilfered an old Korg DTR2000 out of a big heavy rack rig (I decided to retire) since this head doesn't have an on-board tuner like my other heads.

Playing through the tuner makes for a cool little light show while playing, as well. :D

Looks much better than just setting the amp in on top of a cab, and it's not too heavy. :)

Found this auld beast on the bottom of a pond, up the top of my street. Actually I got it on FB Marketplace for $35, coudn't pass it up of course. And it sounds really good! It does look like it's been on the bottom of a pond though, lol. I stuck it in an old rack box, I'll keep it for a backup, use it for jam-oriented parties. I'll get it to my tech dude at some point for a cleanup, might even do a psyechedelic paint job for the front panel after I get the chorus working...
Look at the rust on those jack nuts... dig the corroded finish on the face plate... a beautiful thing, eh??

Gonna start from the inside I think, but that's not my department. I'm alive today because I know that's not my gig, lol.
Tell you what though, these old tanks sound pretty great. They have their own character, much different kind of circuit than the older MK-IIIs and their ilk. I think these were an experiment, hence the odd eq centers, that I think were taken from another design, I've been told anyway, and just pasted into this idea.
They never really were popular somehow, but Kip Winger and Will Lee were poster boys for them when they were being marketed. I had one about ten years ago that I used to patch into an old bag End with a JBL 18. Sounded really nice.

Well. I had sold my Mark III Bass head about a month ago but kept the 115BW. Still have my Max 208 as well. Just a great little amp.

Fast forward to today when I'm at a new acquaintance's place. We get talking amps and he mentions that he has an old Mark III Centurion with some issues. I told him that I would take it home, put it on the workbench, and see what was up and then update him.

I get home, plug it in, hook it up to the 115 and hear something very strange.

I hit a note and then it seems to easily go into premature clipping at a low level. The sound also has a weird, tremolo type character to it.

I ran the preamp out to my SWR's power amp and it sounded GREAT. Like, possibly the best tone I've ever heard out of a Peavey solid state bass amp. It just puts my old Mark III Bass to shame. I was floored. It sounds SO good.

I then went the other way and ran the SWR's preamp into the Centurion's power amp and it sounded nasty as described earlier. Then I cleaned and tightened jacks and such without a change and cleaned the pots. Basically did everything I could without opening it up.

So I called the owner back and told him the situation and my conservative estimate and the way he saw it was that it's an old amp that someone gave him so he doesn't want to put any money into it.

So then he gave it to me. Now I'm going to see if I can repair the power section because wow, that tone needs to be heard. 135 watts could be good for smaller to mid size rooms.

I just downloaded the schematics for it. I figure that I'll check the +/-15v and +/-42v power supplies and go from there. I don't have an oscilloscope. Just a multimeter for now until I start getting more test equipment. Are there any Peavey amp gurus out there have any idea what the fault could be?

Is the Centurion even classed as a bass amp? I had always thought it was a guitar amp.

Either way. I'm pretty happy with it.

So yeah...got a new amp after previously swearing on another forum that the Sunn Alpha Six was going to be the last. I was eyeballing the refurbished units being sold directly from Peavey for months but this popped up on GC used for $200 less which pushed me to finally get one. I'll at least give myself a little leeway with this purchase because it goes directly with the possibility of removing a couple more amps from my possession and going back to the head + cab setup for better portability.

Other than a missing effect knob (shaft is fine so it's a $7 fix at most for a new knob) I can't find much fault with it on first startup.

The Centurion is a really cool amp!
I would say it's a bass amp, with guitar capabilities. If it had master reverb and a saturation circuit on channel 2, it would be a head version of the Renown guitar amp. Since it has neither, it's more like the bass amps of the time, I'd consider it the little brother to the Mark III and Mark IV bass heads.
A similar amp is the Century, which is just channel 1 of the Centurion with a 100W amp. It's kind of their 'catch all' head for use with bass, guitar, keys...
