My advice would be to take your P where you plan on buying, then check out both amps (if possible) to find your liking. Don't let sales people pressure you into buying something you don't like, and keep in mind any budgetary restraints you may have. There's nothing worse than buyer's remorse. Even GAS can't fix that. :) One other note: If a salesperson scoffs at your Squier, leave.

There is a lot of great smaller combo amps out there. If you like the GK thing, I have been really impressed with my mb500. You can find one used for under $350 and add a neo 112 to the mix and you are under 6 bills for a amp that will grow with you. For most gigs a pair of 12's is sufficient. If that is beyond your budget the mb200 is also a great little amp with plenary of power.
I really like the flexibility of a amp and speaker vs a combo.
And since we are in the Peavey forum I am sure the class d Peavey heads are rock solid as well, just have no real world experience.

Hopefully this weekend I will be able to post a pic of my new Alphabass Head. 160 Watts of tube goodness!

I just need a cab now, and was looking at getting an old Model 115 cab, but maybe I should hold out for a VB or Tour cab.

My funds limit me to used, which means I don't save any money, since I just buy more cabs/amps to make up for it like my still-in-the-mail Mace VT head, Triumph 120 combo, and Duel 212 combo! All which will see primary bass usage, but this used market has been rife with gems lately and I couldn't pass up these deals!

I think I'm gonna need an intervention soon....I was just looking at a Mark III XP and an Ultra Plus or XXX, but I reeeeaaallly need a bass cab first and I'm running out of room.

Porkchop2... I fear I may join you in the Peavey cab department. I doesn't help that one can easily get into that setup at reasonable cost!

I'm just trying to figure out if I should go with a modern cab setup like the Greenboys or Barefaced due to weight and space, or get the older cabs for their voicing. What a great and terrible time to be a bassist!.

My main goal was to score another 1502-4 black widow (missing in my 1516 cab) which was in this lot when I got it. I'll be running 2 x 1516 cabs with a Mark 8xp. Awesome rock bass tone with a fender P/J.

I was seriously looking into the greenboy or mesa subway stuff bit its pricey. The 2 black widows sound awesome, excellent mids that cut thru and they love distortion. Lots of the new bass cabs are a sub and a harn it seems, thats more of a PA speaker, I just dont like horns for bass. Plus I dont need all the sub/fundamental tones from a sub, it just muddies up the stage mix. Why pay $1000 for new stuff trying to get a vintage tone when I can get the real deal for $100.

For sure! For me, it's weight and space (see my followup post - I got GAS bad lately). Light, Loud, Cheap - pick two, right? I'm seriously looking at incorporating a couple Peavey 1516's or a 2x15 setup. When I move into my new house and get a "Music Living Room."

Newly acquired Peavey AlphaBass atop newly acquired 410e. Just for photos.

I have been on a real tube amp tear as of late. These are my three latest editions. Peavey AlphaBass, Classic 410e (for the skinny sixer or biamp), and Peavey Triump 120 combo. I still only have two bass combos (GK MB115 and Pignose B100V) and no bass cab, but these are often hard to come by, so the bass cab has to wait. I'm still trying to figure out a way to store all my stuff and I think I'm going to go with those wire shelves and then put my guitar/bass instrument rack up on top to maximize the vertical storage. Since I didn't have a Bass cab, I tested the AlphaBass through the Classic 410e with a guitar and was able to get some decent tone out of it. I can't wait til I can have my basses through it.

I'm still waiting on my Peavey Mace VT head to arrive which I will pair with a Tubeworks Real Tube 12AX7 rack preamp to turn the Mace VT into an all tube setup.

I think I'm good on my skinny sixer cabs, now I just need to look at some Peavey bass cabs!

Peavey is at the heart of my bass rig - running my bass (either direct or through my Zoom B3) into a Peavey Max Bass Pre-Amp (tube and solid-state channels) into a Peavey IPR-3000 feeding 2 fEARful cabinets (15/6 and 15sub). The unit packs a punch so bungee-cord the rack on top of the cabs with piece of foam in-between -- all probably overkill but it gives me piece of mind as I've had two much stuff in the past get knocked off my rig due to vibrations. Godzilla, a blacklight in the spare rack space, and magnets on the grill (not stickers) are optional...

BOC is one of my favorite bands of all time, and it was my love of old Godzilla movies as a teenager that prompted me to check them out. "There goes Tokyo..."

As for the magnets, I don't think those little things can compete with the drivers in a fEARful - kind of like Bambi vs Godzilla... :roflmao:"
