Peavey MiniMega 1000

I had no power or heat issues with my Mini-Max, and haven't heard concerns here on TB. I believe it's a more time-tested topology than the Mini-Mega. The only objection I've seen and experienced is to the fan that runs full time and to some noise in the DI. These issues are real, but nothing show-stopping - for me, anyway.
ok that's good to here I thought these class d's were supposed to give a super clean di ?

I've never heard that. Do you know why that would be?

Some on TB have speculated that the fan operation on the Mini affected the DI signal, but I'm not qualified to comment on the reasons why. I only know that in a few instances sound techs heard noise through my DI, and others on TB have made similar comments in the Mini-Max thread. Techs had no problem working with the DI signal though, and we didn't need to drop a box to avoid it, as has happened on other amp DI's I've owned.

I have not heard this claimed for this amp in particular but for class d amps in general as being low noise. I have seen claims in the trace elliot elf adverts and posts that mention a super clean digital quality di. No idea if that i actually the case though. I am orientating a bit in the light weight market so was curious .....

There are certainly techies around TB who could comment on class D amps (and switch-mode power supplies) in relation to built-in DI's in detail. You might want to start a thread in the amp forum with that question if you're interested. I haven't seen that claim before - is why I asked. Thx!

Go here and read the section headed "Power Supply Rejection (PSR)": Invalid Link Removed. Maybe claims of "super clean DI" are just a way if saying that particular Class D amp was designed to avoid the Class D's inherent vulnerability to power line noise.
Seems plausible thanks. I have to admit I have never really had issues with this with my old fashioned amps i think it's negligible considering the bad earth and shielding issues one can experience let alone the house system Buzz that is not uncommon. Don't even get me started on those quiet gigs with chattering public :) lucky there are not many of those ......

In practice with a good design, this is a total non-issue. The modulation frequencies are just way too high.

It also does not relate to DI circuits in the least, unless possibly the DI signal is post power amp.

I haven't heard any complaints from FOH on any of my class D heads and I HAVE the MM, 2 Genz Benz, a Carvin and had an Ampeg.

Slag you have your opinion and as they say......everybody has one.
Failures should be addressed by the Manf. But I'll bet there are a lot more working than failing. My Carvin failed and I fixed it. I traded my PF500 which never failed and they had a rep for that. And people love them, me not so much. I love my B15.
As to switching to GK been there done that 85-95 thats not my tone now.
And Mesa, wanted to love the Subway missed the mid control. I think I'd like the 800+ just fine.
My Minimega is busy racking up 3 more loud blues rock gigs this weekend. Im busy punishing mine and you will be the first to hear if and when it screws up.

i have nothing against peavey at all. at all! peavey has been an innovator in the biz and brought good stuff to market. i'm a huge fan of the original Cirrus line, for instance - great, versatile, rock solid instruments. i'm happy that your amp has experienced no problems. i tried one out and thought it sounded really good. others here share your experience, and that's great. HOWEVER, saying that there are more working properly than ones that break is hardly a positive thing!! how many failures on the D800 site? almost ZERO. the minimega? DOZENS. i want my amps to fire up every time, all the time.

And this is the story of the solid state heads that are all outsourced to China. Even if some are assembled USA the components are made in China. I don't hate Ampeg. My SVT7pro had killer tone through my favorite cabs, but it died mid gig with a smelly electronics burning as have many people's before me. I snagged a PF800 on Amazon for a good price and it did not work at all. It was one with full warranty but I had to ship it to SF from Santa Cruz because that was the only authorized repair. Simple.. do the Amazon return and be done with crappy warranties. I have had several Genz amps. Only one needed a minor issue fixed. (headphone input). Mr Genzler is the king of customer service as he paid for full return repair of a simple cold solder. I don't own one of his now but would any day. The warranty for Fender Super Bassman is 5 year transferable. I took advantage of that. Orange had a great customer service dept when they were blowing up capacitors from China. My miniMega is second owner and is working flawlessly. Since Harley Peavey has shipped his assembly operations overseas it would be nice if they offered a better warranty. Every one of these circuit board amps can fail from any manufactuer and the key is the warranty, or transferable warranty.

Yep, you and me might be lucky for a decade, has nothing to do with the quality of the design. The devil is in the details. aka the mass produced parts from China. I remember when a guy from overseas was dismissive of my SVT7 pro issues because his was working just fine. Now he and I wax poetic about how great our Fender 300 Bassman are doing. It is just the luck of the draw when you buy something with a bunch of components made in China. The warranty is your only friend! I got my miniMega off of reverb.com from a samash store. I would not pay full price for any manufacturers product without a killer warranty and would not buy second hand unless it was super cheap and I was ready to use it as a door stop or boat anchor if it failed. The mine works fine post is a "sorry dude" post. There has to be a good warranty or a simple commodity price that enables one to take it to the ewaste station with their latest laptop failure.
I have a minimega and it has been real good so far.. Big fat sounding amp.. Clean as a whistle.

Just got one of these a couple days ago. Worked great for a week. Then today went to turn it on and nothing. No lights, no sound, just an electrical hum. I checked the fuse and it's good. Peavey said I'm out of luck because I'm not the original owner/no receipt. Any ideas? Thanks!
Out of luck...does this mean they won't fix it or they won't fix it for free?

Won't fix it free.
It's a bummer but it happens when you roll the dice on used gear with no warranty. What's the cost to repair?

I'd be lying if I said the failure reports don't bother me. I definitely carry a backup. But I do that anyway.

I've had 5 amps that had problems, including two British made trace amps, euphonic audio, genz and Mesa. Gibson wouldn't support the first trace but my dealer swapped it for a second that crapped out after 13 years. I got the EA used and they repaired it even though it was way out of warranty. That was above and beyond good service. Agedhorse fixed the used genz under warranty even though the company was kaput. Mesa fixed the used prodigy under warranty.

So I'm cautious about used gear. I wouldn't get a minimega used. But I also don't feel comfortable with GK, ampeg or any other brand that won't transfer the warranty. But they are up front that if you aren't the original owner you pay for repair.

I own the MM because it sounds good, it's small, high powered and I got a super deal on a new one. I own a subway because it sounds good, it's small, high powered and Mesa is a super company that stands by their products.

good post. i really liked the one i tried, that's why i'm disappointed with the reports of trouble - i couldn't bring myself to buy one. like to see a mk. II, one without all the gimcracks, but a great solid build or whatever it takes to make things right.

Have had mine for about a week now, bought brand new at a great price, open box sale. Got the full warranty. Trying to figure out the EQ, playing into my 12/6. Tried all the bangs and whistles, and , so far, the Punch button is really the only effect I like and use, along with some compression. Right now my EQ is : Gain at about 7, Volume at about 5. Low Mid, wide Q , boosted a 1 o'clock, at 250 hz, and High Mid, narrow Q , boosted at about 3 o'clock at about 2 khz. Low is at 1 o'clock, High is at 2 o'clock. Punch is on. These settings get me pretty close to the way my GB Shuttle 9.2 sounds, with a definitely louder and heftier feeling. I dunno if that is due to the Punch effect, or the extra 200 watts I'm getting into the 8 ohm, 12/6. The Kosmos effects seem to be something I probably would not use. The Crunch effect instantly adds dirt and is definitely something I don't want. Overall, I like it it, although I don't know yet if it is significantly better than my Shuttle 9.2. I definitely have to crank the Shuttle to about 3 o'clock on the Master to achieve the same ballpark volume as the MM on about a noon setting. No problems yet of any malfunctions. The supplied gig bag is cheap, as others have stated, and I've already found a substitute for it. Big test will be on the gig, of course, but, so far, a lot of bang for the buck. I should add that I have been leaving it on for several hours each day, occasionally playing through it. The fan is always on, right from power up. It gets a little warm, but nothing to worry about.

Help, bass brothers. I was offered a used MM and I'm tempted, but I want to know the problems people have had with the amp. So far I've read about fan noise, DI noise, noise associated with the lights, and amps that just stopped working. I think I read an early post that indicated that warranties were not transferable, too. Any other issues?

Also, how has this worked for you string bass players? I'm a doubler, but upright tone is key. Everyone able to dial in what they need?

Thanks!

Loose screws holding the circuit board for the lights above the knobs.
