By the way, is there a notable difference in tone between these two types of pups:

I may be able to snatch one without the small metal line inside the toaster hole but I like the more "decorated" look of the other. :hmm:

What I gathered was the ones without the blades (from the first couple years of production) have less "bite" to the sound than the later blade pickups. I found the blade pickups sounded a bit too harsh for my taste, and loved the original toaster pickups. There isn't a HUGE difference, but it is noticeable if you play both, that the ones with the blades have some more treble response to them, though there was plenty in the older pickups for my liking.

Finally had some extra money and picked up the T40 today. According to the serials list, its a 1978 and the 8 digit serial is 8M274028. Pretty good condition for an old bass. Its in pieces now and its being cleaned and polished from headstock to bridge :hyper:

GC flat refuses to come down on the $400 price (without case, and with for-real buckle rash and desperately in need of new strings and a setup) of the T40 I mentioned earlier...apparently the district mgr's claiming it's 'vintage.' The store mgr says he's trying to see if anything can be done, tho...but I dunno...

I recently picked up a red/maple '80 T-40 w/hard plastic case from the GC here in town in very good condition for a very good price. It was also marked as a vintage instrument.

According to the store manager, it's company policy that anything over 20 years of age is supposed to be marked vintage (this means they won't open any control cavity or adjust it). In my case, the "pricers" didn't realize red was a factory color and they priced it as a repaint. He also said sometimes the stores get lazy and don't follow process.

I replaced the .022 and .033 mfd capacitors with .1 mfd on both pickups, and I'm really happy with the sound. It had the bladed pickups and was very bright, even after I put Chromes on it.

Is this the correct way to position the neck plate? I feel like its upside down and am considering changing it when I put mine back together

Both my friend who works guitar sales and the store mgr agree that it's overpriced, and I've shown them this thread and a few ads from the class-ad pages here as my argument. But apparently, the dist mgr hereabouts is a real Company Guy, incapable of independent thought, and if it's in the book, it's Law.

We'll see, but tbh I'm beginning to lose interest in this one.

Yesterday I went up to Guitar Center in Independence, MO and I was shocked to find a 1980 black and maple T-40 and toaster pickups, here is a pic:

It needed some work mainly the neck pickup ring had the corners closest to the neck were chipped and had some scratches on the back and edge of the body where the arm contour has a small bit of the finish missing but it is really small but played amazing and sounded really good and I really liked the strings that were on it and sorry about the crappy pic but I took it with my phone and off topic there was also a Kustom I think tuck and roll amp and matching speaker cab and a 1978 Guild B-301 but it had been refinished in this brown stain color.

I own two t-40's, and only paid $250 for my first, and maybe $300 in parts for the second. Has anyone noticed how ridiculous the prices are for plain old natural finish T-40s on eBay? $450-600 seems "reasonable" and then every listings has some BS line like "these are getting rare," even when there's up to 8 n the first page of an eBay search.

Sorry for ranting, but I love my T-40's and would like one of a rarer color, but I can't justify some people's asking prices.
