Ok, the serial number is 01422712, which would make it an '83?

Played my first practice with it today...in love...plays like a dream and sounds really cool and unique...strange combo of Gibson Ripper/Rickenbacker that really is something...VERY happy to be in this club :)

There are actually 10 "zero" basses they used as demo's when they first built them. They had a decimal point to differenciate between them. I got thte one w/o a decimal point. I bought my first T40 when they were first released somtime in 77/78. It has a 6 digit serial number instead of an 8 digit one and I bought the "zero" bass off another bassist I know a few years ago. The Zero is not in as good a shape as my original but I just couldn't pass it up. :D

Wow...so it's safe to say you kinda like T-40's? Hah! I'm not 100%, as I just got my first one a little over a week ago, but it easily become my main bass...the necks are so good...great balance...I think they look cool as heck...got work out a couple noisy pots and switches...my only complaint is that the electronics seem a tad over designed...I'm a P-Bass kinda guy...2 pickups are fine, but I think dialing in a setup is a tad fussy...on mine at least. Also need to sort out the best strings for this bass. Was gonna have it setup with 50-110 roundwounds, and if that aint the trick, switch to flats.

Within the last few months I fixed the neck bow on it and it plays that much better. It's currently strung with Pyramid Golds, but I might chuck some R. Cocco's on it soon.

What strings do you guys/gals like on it?!

I've been a life long P-Bass guy, but I'm over the moon for my '83 Black/Rosewood T-40...built like a tank, plays like a dream...sounds just different enough, but still classic...mine is lighter than some...What don't I like? The phase switch doesn't do anything for me, so I just don't use it :)

I love Fender basses...the Cowpoke? Kinda funny looking IMO...rarely do I enjoy these 'updates' on what are already perfect basses in their own right...plus, vintage is always cooler than new...shallow, but true :)

As long as the electronics are in good working order and you have a nice wide, comfy strap around, you just cant beat a T40 (and in certain circumstances, you can beat someone WITH the T40 if you're being threatened with a busted longneck beer bottle in a bar brawl).

In over 30 years of playing and nearly 2 dozen basses owned through the years, the T-40 is the ONLY model I've owned more than once. I had a 3TS/maple back in the 80's and now I have a 79 natural/maple that I got a couple years ago. I will NEVER be without a T-40 in my arsenal for as long as I'm playing bass and have a functional skeletal system!

And as far as strings go, I'm a steel rounds kind of guy. IMHO those strings really get you the closest to a Ric tone. I've been using Blue Steels for a looong time and I recently discovered that I like D'Addario Pro Steels.

+1 on the steel rounds, I generally dislike them but rotosounds worked well on the older T-40 (toaster pickups without the exposed blades) for a good almost ric sound. I also really enjoyed GHS Precision Flats, had thump without being too boomy or muddy, and really awesome growl with the bridge pickup soloed.

I really need a case for mine. There was one on the other side of Canada for $80, but the guy said shipping would be $80. I don't really want to spend $160 on a case. :( I want to get a few more T-40 basses. I'd like one with the toasted pickups and one that I can try dropping some Darkstar pickups in it.

EDIT: What control settings do you fellas prefer? I honestly haven't played around with the settings a lot since I put the Golds on it.

Also, can anyone post a picture of their string height? My strings seem pretty high near the higher notes, but the neck isn't warped or curved. I might just need a good professional setup.

My T-40 is on the way and I'm looking forward to it. :) I'll be joining this club very soon.

The T-40 has its own thing going, for sure and its cool that it has such a die-hard cult following.

Your strings are too bright for me, though! :p The reason I'd prefer a T-40 instead of something active is fuller, warmer tone so I want strings that work well for that sound. How are your frets holding up?

Argh, my GAS is getting worse and worse! Still searching for one in Finland but it seems I won't be finding any. :( Haven't decided if I should try to snag one via TB's wanted or keep browsing eBay daily to find a one I like. Urgh, I'm just afraid I'll get scammed waiting UPS to deliver a box of rocks from overseas. :bawl: I hope I'll find someone from EU at least so that I don't have to pay the taxes.

Absolutely beautiful. I have been using R.Coccos on my round-strung basses for about two years and love them. To note, I use nickels on all of them, except my Ric, which gets steels. I love the way the steels give me that classic Ric tone, but they're too bright for my other basses, and they chew up my fingertips and the frets.

You can't go wrong with either, I just prefer nickels.
