You will have to grind off the heel on it for it to work.
Sometimes the walls of the socket part are too thick as well.
I use one of these and bent the shaft to make it easier to turn the TR.

This January I paid $725 for one, a 1979 black/maple in excellent shape. I might’ve been able to pay less, but I wanted the toaster pickups and the colored ones are a bit rarer than the naturals - as well as being lighter.

Did yours come with a case? Do you mind sharing where you got it?
Mine is of course toasters, but it is a natural.
I just got it off Reverb, but it wasn't up for very long - I bought it about 30 minutes after it was posted, lol. It did not have a case, but honestly I never used the hard case anyway.
This is the third one I've had, first one was a white/maple 1980 (sadly stolen) and the second was a natural/maple 1982. Both of the colored ones were lighter than my natural, which was well over 12lbs - I think my white one was about 10.5 and this black one is a hair over 11lbs. So not light, but not bad with a decent strap.
I'm definitely a fan of the toaster pickups more than the blades, I thought I would like the extra brightness of the blades on my 1982 but honestly they were too aggressive for my liking, and too high output. It was hard to keep that bass reigned in, and it had almost too much low end as well, you'd get huge output spikes if you hit the strings a little hard and got them close to the blades. Even with the pickups completely lowered I'd still get the warbling sound that happens when the strings are too close.
That's probably a preference thing for me though - I don't like exposed polepieces as much as covered. Anyway, here's a pic of my bass!

I also like the toasters best. The T-40 is probably headed to the block because of my recent dual-darkstar Telebass which is getting all the work that the T-40 would have. The Telebass has a great wide frequency range and dynamics, but it's not as even-output and forgiving (I mean that as a good thing) as the T-40. That's primarily why I kept the T-40 as my main recording bass years after I had deemed it too heavy for gigging.
Man, just writing this makes me want to put an even higher price on it to increase the chance that I'll "have" to keep it!

It's kinda hard to accurately gauge the prices for these basses currently but I feel like currently that's a pretty decent price for a non-natural version. Before I picked this one up I offered $675 for a white/maple 1980, which the seller accepted - but then he declined the offer to get the instrument checked out by a luthier after I asked him a few questions about the neck (wasn't trying to scam, the neck looked fine to me in the listing). I believe that bass sat on reverb for a month or so after he re-listed it at $750. I saw one burgundy finish go for $900, but that kinda makes sense because there's very few of those.
The naturals are so much more plentiful that I think they're sellable at more like $600 - which is what I paid in full for my natural 1982 a couple years ago. I see some of these guys listing natural finish blade models for like $750+ and I don't think we're there yet - they seem to sit there for 1-3 months and then sell when the prices are dropped.
I bought my first T-40 (white/maple 1980) for $350 in 2010... wish they were still that price!
I was lucky to get my 1980 white/maple T-40 back in the summer of 2014. I paid $550 for it and a Combo 300 from the original owner of both. It was one of those going to a good home deals, the photo is of him and his gear on the day I took over stewardship. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have this bass and amp in my possession.
Here is what mine looks like. The outer diameter of the socket is .470" and it barely fits in the slot on my T40
So Rosie had a spa day today. The works. I even did a neck tilt, which was the first time I've touched this. According to my T40 manual, my nut is at the end of its life. So I put some heavier gauge strings on it just for some fun before I change the nut out. I remember someone recently talking about finding some NOS Parts online. Some may have been brass? Did anyone save this link? Thanks.

Be a devil, make your own nut! You will love the end result, bone or some kind of metal.
Not that it matters in the big picture, but I picked up my T-40 again and is it nice! I ventured off on a T-bird for awhile but sold it yesterday and fired up the -40. What a neck! That's all I've got. Stay safe.
I don’t know any links for NOS parts other than maybe Reverb or eBay but Frets On The Net might be able to help you with some of that stuff. Cutting a new nut is not a big job for a competent tech either, that can be done pretty easily.
The neck tilt is kinda funny - on my earlier (‘79 and ‘80) model T-40s it hasn’t been all that necessary to mess with it, but on my 1982 it was absolutely impossible to get reasonable action without spending time getting that dialed in. I wonder if they changed the neck pocket depth on those later ones - I’ve never measured to compare unfortunately.

As far as doing the nut myself...no way...im handy but also dont have the tools.
The amount of material past the nut (headstock side) is pretty thin and im not risking it.
Bought one a few years ago for nostalgia's sake, as the first bass I ever bought with my own money was a rosewood/black T-40.
I always drooled over the natural finish ones, so that's what I bought.
After owning it for a few weeks, I refreshed my memory on all of the reasons I sold my first one.
Not a huge fan. I should probably sell it to somebody who would appreciate it more than I do.
