Yea the pups on your Foundy are odd IMO. I wanna say I have seen others with them and I almost got fooled enough to pick one of them up once (it was on eBay) thinking it had SFs but looking closer I could see they weren't.

everytime I plug it in my roomy says I sound like Entwistle(tone, not playing)sort of the reason I hold onto it. Strings up BEAD really well also. Black holoflake, carbon fabric visible in neck. light,sleek. Do I sense a G-Bass Club on the horizon?

I wonder if my T-40 is not in dire need of an overhaul, because I am not impressed by the sound.

I do not think the pots are shot, but the caps may be. This thing has 4 capacitors. I think I may unsolder everything, test the pots, keep if they still work, and get rid of the capacitors.

What do you guys think? I don't think the pickups are to blame, they're just coil, after all, and they give a lot of sound, but the sound lacks a lot in the high end.

Can the capacitors go bad with time?

Just wondering.

What you may be encountering is the difference between band mix tone and the current trend of "stand alone" "mid ish" tone.

Listen back to 70s tunes.. like a Willie Nelson Red Headed Stranger LP (no this is not a T-40)

For some nutty reason folks forget that a bass really "glues" a band together.. you almost need to judge the instrument and setup with a complete band.

I'd start with some quality strings and a good setup.

It is possible that you may be looking for a "hotter" mid sound.. vs a classic sound.

Have you tried rolling back the tone knobs to about 1/2? I know so many people who don't like the T40 but never put it into humbucking mode, just leave everything wide open like they do on most other basses. Totally changes the bass in a band situation.

Pickups & knobs: no, except from a parted out or broken one. They don't make'em anymore.

Pots and electronic components: those can be replaced with standard parts except for the tone, which have a way to deactivate split the coils.

The switches are also standard, the phase switch for instance is a Radio Shack part that is still carried today.

As pertains to the "special" tone pot, I'm not totally sure that it is anything special. I was looking through my "Guitar Player Repair Guide" and it has a schematic for using a regular stock tone pot to go from single to humbucker mode. I'm sure the Peavey schematic is a bit more complicated, but the basic concept of using a stock pot to bring one coil in and out of the circut seems pretty sound.

Eilif, on the T60 forum, they confirmed that plenty of owners replaced the tone pots with push / push or push / pull pots to do the splitting, so that they can have bright sound with double coils
