People who are banned

Disagree on this. I wouldn't call them friends in the same way as people I hang out with IRL, but I've come to care about some people I interacted with only through forums, and a couple times I've been unable to reach them post-ban, but would have liked to.

I like the idea a banned and why list, but I understand mods can't do their jobs if they have to argue about it with users. And I am quite happy with the moderation here.

I'd like to hear your other ideas about how you think this would "benefit the forum in many ways." I can't really see any myself, but I'm open-minded.

One problem I see is that a "simple" explanation for many bans would probably be difficult to provide, as I assume most bans aren't for a single violation in a particular thread but of a pattern of behavior over time. If that's the case, then being told that the violated rule X in thread Y wouldn't really tell you much anyway.

Well, first I guess I'll repeat that it would be a bad idea in "thread" style, but not so much in the members section. Just information. No discussion. The information need not be detailed or include any opinions. So and so was banned for violation of (the rule) from his/her posts in the thread (insert thread). Or for subsequent violations of the whatever rules. It would also include whether it was a permanant ban, or temporary, and for how long. I don't see how that would cause any more problems or humiliation that the current crossed out name, and "banned." I think it would actually make things easier on everyone. It would put an end to threads like "Why was KBD banned," also.

It would also be helpful in that people would see that the rules are actually enforced, and members would have a better understanding of what gets people banned.

I think it could also benefit by what @jmattbassplaya said here, but I didn't mention cuz I didn't want to complicate the already complicated :).

I do think it would be a good idea for banned members to have the option of leaving contact information. There are a few people here who I feel I've gotten close to, who's contact info I don't have. If they suddenly disappeared for getting too drunk one night or something, I'd feel bad. And I'd want to know what happened. Or even better maybe, a way for members to be able to send contact info ONLY to the banned member. A box for email addresses only, or something like that.

I think this would put Talkbass above all the rest as far as moderation goes. Not that this is a competition :) (if it is we already won), but, yeah... we've got a great forum. This might make it even greater - as in "we really care!" :). Even when we ban you!

I agree with the above. As someone who trips/falls/steps over lines in real life on occasion, I wouldn't mind seeing real-world examples of where the lines are. Not that I post all that much anymore.


Ok ... full disclosure, the gossipy part of me just wants to know as well. Still wondering about Jacquo III-X and Jeff Berlin, just as a student of Talkbass History.

I'm with Joe on this. I think if you screw up badly enough to get banned, the community ought to know why. The sentiment that a member won't want to get outed on the banish list makes sense.. but too bad. You reap what you sow. And since permanent bans pretty much always follow multiple warnings and/or temporary bans, I'm betting the (excellent TB) mods have already made it crystal clear to the offender to dial it down or bad things will happen.

A banish list could actually improve accountability and adherence to the rules.

Make it a closed sticky.
