Pets and bass?

I had a cat for years who would curl up on top of my cabinets when I played, never sat up there when I didn't so I assume she liked it.

I have a Lab now. She doesn't seem to care one way or the other about the noise, but guitar playing friends learn quickly that you don't turn your back on your floor pedals unless you think fresh drool adds to your mojo.

My Great Dane is long gone now but I occasionally still come across dried drool marks.... No telling where it'd end up when he shook his head...

My cat never minded bass or guitar---in fact, walking bass used to relax him, and he'd eventually nod off (I'd like to think it wasn't from boredom....).

But he would run to the hills when he saw the mandolin--he hated that thing.

I play mostly double bass these days, but my cats definitely like it. They sleep in my studio while I practice, and occasionally offer commentary at the ends of phrases.

By trial and error, I have discovered that they like string instruments (guitar, violin, etc are A-okay) but woodwinds are the tool of the devil, particularly oboe and sax.

How do your pets respond when you play at home? The dogs ignore me, one of the cats seems to like my low notes.

mine gave up, just acepted it !
Now they just get comfy & ignore the sh*t out of me!
but good company regardless !

My cats run away when I start playing - they totally freak out. My older cat would try and get in my way and sit on my lap and try and get me to rub her head if I was playing but she's been gone for two years.

They ignore me. I'm just the treat-dispenser making noise. I did have a dog that was fascinated by the Irish Whistle. She'd just sit and stare when I played.

My biggest dilemma is that my Rotty/Lab Mix sheds fur like crazy and for some reason static electricity causes it to adhere to the felt covers on my Eden Cabs. Every time before I load my gear in the car prior to a gig I have to pull out the packing tape gun and use strips of tape to remove the insane amounts of dog hair filaments from the cabs.

Annoying as hell - but it's a small price to pay for having such a good dog.

I am striving to be the man my dog thinks I am....

As for his reaction to my my music - it seems to calm him when I play acoustic guitar, mandolin or double bass, but when the band is rehearsing he no likey - he goes and hides.

My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is hearing impaired. She lays down on the couch and falls immediately when I play. It doesn't matter how loudly (or poorly) I play. This is like a perfect neurotic relationship; it works perfectly as long as no one gets better.

All the cats we ever owned liked bass and guitar. None of them liked the sound of any wind instrument. Especially a clarinet. (Don't ask.) Had one cat (Smudge) that used to hang on the front of the stereo's floor speakers with his eyes closed if you'd play rock music that had a lot of bass and you cranked it up. But that cat always was a punk at heart.

Our dog likes music. Period.

My kitts used to love hanging around when i was learning doinking out wrong notes on a tiny Silvertone practice amp, but not that I've upgraded my home setup to a 600w 212, they run for the hallway when they see me strap on that Spector & fire it up

One of my dogs runs at the sight of a bass or guitar. The other tries to sing along. He isn't a bad vocalist, I have definitely heard worse.
